Inception → Distillation → Maturation → Finished Product This timeline can be 10+ years! That timeline matters when you’re deciding whether to build a distillery or start as a sourcing brand. Building a distillery is capital intensive from day one. Land, construction, equipment, compliance, staffing, utilities, working capital. Then you wait. And wait. Your first meaningful return often comes many years after the first dollar goes out. There has to be a LONG term plan in place for a project of this size. Sourcing changes the equation. By sourcing whiskey, you shorten the path to revenue. You can bring product to market while barrels are still aging. You can generate cash flow in the interim. You can reinvest those returns back into inventory, brand, or eventually your own production. It also significantly lowers initial capital outlay. You are allocating capital toward barrels and brand building instead of tying it up entirely in fixed infrastructure before a single bottle is sold. That flexibility matters. Especially in an industry where patience is mandatory and capital efficiency separates brands that survive from those that stall. There is no single right path. Some brands are built to distill from day one, and KILL it! Others are built to source, learn the market, prove demand, and grow deliberately. Where do you fit in the equation?

Homogeneity without sacrificing throughput. That’s where the right blending technology makes a difference. At SternMaid America, we understand that food manufacturers are being asked to do two things at once: ➡️ Produce more ➡️ Maintain—and improve—product consistency The good news? You don’t necessarily have to choose between quality and quantity. When compared with a conventional ribbon blender, a plow shear blender can provide a more intensive mixing environment, helping achieve highly homogenous blends while maintaining efficient processing times. For food manufacturers, that can mean: 🔹 More uniform distribution of minor and major ingredients 🔹 Consistent product quality throughout the batch 🔹 Reduced risk of segregation and variability 🔹 Efficient mixing cycles that support production demands 🔹 Scalable processing without making homogeneity an afterthought At SternMaid America, our approach goes beyond simply selecting a blender based on batch capacity. We look at the formulation, ingredient characteristics, desired homogeneity, mixing intensity, and production requirements to help our customers identify the right process. Because the objective isn't simply to process the largest batch possible. It's to produce a highly homogenous, consistently high-quality product—at the throughput your operation demands. If you're evaluating your current blending process or looking for ways to improve homogeneity without compromising production efficiency, SternMaid America can help.

The Real Cost of $16/Hour Labor: Why Food Processors Are Automating Palletizing Let's talk about the actual cost of manual palletizing with entry-level warehouse labor. Hiring a worker to stack 25kg boxes at $16-18/hour: • Base wages: $33,280-$37,440 annually (full-time equivalent) • Payroll taxes (7.65%): $2,546-$2,865 • Workers' comp insurance: $2,000-$4,000 (high-risk manual labor) • Basic benefits (if any): $1,500-$3,000 • Recruitment/training (high turnover): $2,000-$3,000 per year • Total annual cost per position: $41,000-$50,000 • Reality: Limited to 8-hour shifts, frequent turnover, injury risk Two-shift operation (covering 16 hours/day): • Total annual labor cost: $82,000-$100,000 for 2 workers Installing a WSC-MD Robot Palletizer: • Initial investment: ~$80,000 USD • Annual operating cost: ~$3,000 • Capacity: 6-11 boxes per minute, up to 35kg payload • Operating hours: 24/7/365 • Turnover rate: 0% • Workers' comp claims: 0% • Payback period: 18-24 months with two-shift coverage • After payback: $79,000-$97,000 annual savings (every year) The Hidden Costs You're Already Paying: Manual palletizing isn't just about hourly wages. It's about: 1. Turnover Crisis Entry-level warehouse positions see 30-50% annual turnover. Each replacement costs $2,000-3,000 in recruiting, onboarding, and lost productivity during training. 2. Workplace Injuries Repetitive lifting of 20-25kg boxes causes: Back injuries (most common warehouse injury) Shoulder strain Knee problems Average workers' comp claim: $40~60,000 Lost productivity during recovery 3. Inconsistent Productivity Hour 1: 100% efficiency Hour 6: 75% efficiency (fatigue sets in) Weekend/night shifts: Harder to staff, higher pay rates Busy seasons: Overtime at 1.5x rate 4. Labor Market Reality Finding workers willing to perform heavy manual labor is increasingly difficult. Even at $18/hour, many facilities struggle to maintain full staffing. Beyond the Numbers: This isn't just about cost. It's about: Safety — Eliminating high-injury repetitive lifting Reliability — No call-outs, no turnover, consistent performance Scalability — 24/7 capacity without overtime costs Competitiveness — Operating efficiently when others struggle with staffing Employee retention — Redeploy workers to less physically demanding roles The Decision: You can continue cycling through entry-level workers who will eventually tire, get injured, or find better opportunities. The question isn't "Can we afford automation?" The question is: "Can we afford constant turnover, injury risk, and unreliable staffing?"
