History tells us that periods of exuberance are almost always followed by a correction. Had a great time at DC Startup & Tech Week (Formerly DC Startup Week) moderating a panel with Scott Christensen (Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund (CBSCF) , Faith Davis (Exelon) and Bill McNulty (NextEra Energy Investments), convened by the great C'pher Gresham. Here's a quick recap: 1) The panelists were phenomenal - a mixture of corporate, state and foundation-backed VC's all focusing on climate. They're actively funding companies across a range of sectors - e.g. nature-based solutions, energy + AI, water, etc. Point being, we were lucky to have experts with such broad purviews. 2) The current climate could be pushing at least some climate VC's to focus on software and move away from hardware, at least temporarily. This type of capital may indeed just be better suited for software companies at this juncture. It also reflects the fact that certain segments of the climate-tech market are just more mature than others - e.g. software performs best once the hardware and the business case around it are solid, then it becomes and optimization and efficiency game. 3) Founders need to target "must-solve" climate problems from the investor lens. In other words, yes there's a sea of climate challenges where startups can be additive. However, in this environment, few of these areas are attracting meaningful capital. There's nothing wrong with tackling problem areas that are under-invested, we need this in spades. However, for those trying to get capital in the door, realize the constraints that come with targeting problems that investors just aren't prioritizing. 4) Look to funders overseas. The EU, where so much climate finance, policy and general expertise has come from, could be playing a much more important role. I'd also argue that Gulf countries like KSA and UAE are going to be critical here too, not to mention China, of course. 5) We need mentoring and coaching to be at an all-time high. With so much uncertainty, networks/communities where both founders and investors can learn from/lean on each other have never been more important. The panel/audience was a nice microcosm of the types of support networks we need to be actively building. The AI CapEx War is Now a Board Governance Imperative: Strategy Must Govern Spend 💡 The brilliant R "Ray" Wang's analysis on CNBC with the fabulous Becky Quick—projecting a $410 billion AI CapEx surge by 2025 and declaring a "war for compute power"—doesn't just signal a massive market shift; it establishes AI as the single greatest fiduciary responsibility in the modern boardroom. This isn't just about big numbers or hitting the "250 Gigawatts of compute power by 2030" target; it's about top-down strategic guidance to ensure that this torrential capital flow doesn't become a drain on enterprise value. My Advice to the Boardroom through Three Pillars of AI Oversight: We can no longer afford to let the enterprise pursue small, uncoordinated AI implementations. Senior leadership must provide the compass. Reconcile AI with Enterprise Goals (Growth and Brand): Strategic Guidance: Every major AI investment must be directly tied to our most aggressive growth goals. If a $10M investment is simply a 'cool project' and not a catalyst for 10x efficiency or new market entry, it’s failing the strategy test. Public Perception: AI is an extension of our brand. We must set clear AI no-go zones and boundaries for risk before deployment. Brand risk from a faulty algorithm—or an ethical lapse—can wipe out years of brand equity faster than any financial misstep. Define and Defend Acceptable Risk: Operational Risk: What is the acceptable risk profile for integrating AI into mission-critical processes? This needs to be a board-approved risk appetite statement, not a mid-level IT decision. Investment Pool: As Ray noted, CapEx is on fire. This spend directly impacts the available investment pool for every other strategic priority—from M&A to global expansion. The CEO and Board must be the ultimate arbiters of this resource allocation. Treat Compute as a Core Competitive Asset: The "cost per gigawatt" is our new operational expenditure focus. Are we optimizing to make that spend productive, or simply consuming capacity? The winning strategy is the one that views compute infrastructure as a lever for competitiveness, not just a utility bill. AI is more than a technology; it impacts competitiveness, brand perception, and financial viability. That makes it the non-delegable responsibility of the most senior business leaders. The market will reward the companies whose Boards have clearly defined their AI strategy and risk posture. Congrats OPAQUE Systems and Confidential Computing Consortium on organizing another great Confidential Computing Summit! Thanks for having me on the VC panel - I enjoyed the discussion with Larry, Natalia and Aaron. Here are a few takeaways from our discussion: 💡 Shadow AI: similar to shadow IT, it is turning out to be a headache for enterprise buyers. For teams and individuals, it is easy to start working with AI products but that can quickly lead to data leakage. While incumbents will look at this space, it is an opportunity for founders to build something interesting. 💡 Data: it continues to be a barrier to enterprise AI adoption. Data discovery, lineage, policy, governance become key for leaders interested in gen AI. While founders are moving fast with AI, they might be better served helping customers get their data in a state that helps accelerate AI adoption. 💡 AI attack surface: going back to the k8s example - developers want clusters to be spun up quickly whereas security org wants to ensure things are done in a secure/compliant manner. There is always this tension between moving fast and doing it within enterprise guardrails. This problem becomes larger once agents/llms are introduced. Security for AI and AI for security will both continue to become interesting spaces for innovation. 💡 Future: Agents are coming. The most basic agent is a while () loop with a bunch of API calls including tools/LLMs and some recursive logic. Once rich context is added and maintained, these orchestrated systems can solve problems with high accuracy. Customers can already hire agents to make workforce more productive. This creates challenges with identity (authZ, authN), onboarding, observability, communication, networking. Excited to announce that Sequoia Capital is leading the Series B in Zed Industries Zed is an open-source, multiplayer code editor built for performance from the ground up in Rust, built by the creators of Atom and Electron. Zed is used by ~150K active developers including ~10% of the Rust community (up 10x y-o-y!). Nathan Sobo and team believe from first-hand experience that decade-old web tech (i.e. VS Code) just won't cut it to build a world-class editing experience. The IDE needs to evolve significantly for AI, and the Zed team believes a wholesale rewriting is necessary, prioritizing speed and collaboration as first-class attributes. Zed's multiplayer collaborative vision is especially important as developers begin collaborating with AI agents in our code bases. They've built some important primitives to enable this already, e.g. DeltaDB, an open-source sync engine that captures every code operation, enabling character-level permalinks and real-time collaboration.
