This week's City Journal substack post is a foray into the realm of urban economics, or more specifically, the economics of... parking. New York wants to raise revenue; the city has 3mn parking spots, most of which are free; real-estate in the city is some of the most valuable in the entire world. But there is an even better approach to simply charging for it: New York should auction the spaces and allow the market to determine their most valuable use. The city would raise $3bn / year from this, according to my calculations. And out of this revenue, we could create dedicated funds for communities to spend how they like. Furthermore, the other advantage is that this radically expands the potential uses of this land, that restaurants could use for outdoor seating, businesses as parking bays, and residents could create pocket-parks. What are some alternative ways in which you might want to see the streets used? #NewYork #Parking #UrbanEconomics Link to the piece: https://lnkd.in/eXZtkmm4

Proud to have been a part of this project to roll out a set of cooling interventions for business corridors in NYC. If summer 2026 highlighted anything it is that our cities need cooling infrastructure and fast. Business corridors, local shops, high streets - whatever you call them - they are the hearts of our cities. We need to keep them safe, liveable, and cooler through sweltering summers. Excited to see the Pitkin Avenue bus shelter pilot launch in Brownsville this week, including New York City's first green roof bus shelter alongside heat reflective shelter roofs. It has been a pleasure working with the teams at Resilient Cities Catalyst, NYC Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, Pitkin Avenue Business Improvement District, New York City Department of Transportation and too many others to name here.
