"Democracy isn't just about elections...it gives us the freedom to imagine and pursue lives of our own choosing." - President Laura Chinchilla (CR)
More than a week later, I’m still marveling at the magic of the
Moonshot Platform Summit and the extraordinary work of the entire team to bring together young leaders, mentors, changemakers and world leaders from every corner of the globe to think deeply about democracy, peace and the future of our planet.
So many reflections to come, but I’d be remiss not to share how honored I was to take the stage with
Laura Chinchilla Miranda, former President of Costa Rica and the first woman to hold the office, for a conversation about democracy, peace, leadership and the future we’re choosing to build.
President Chinchilla reminded us that democracy is far more than elections. It gives people the freedom to imagine and pursue lives of their own choosing.
However, it’s also fragile, sustained by institutions and by the daily choices of ordinary people: whether we listen across difference, seek truth, resist fear and remain engaged.
Costa Rica offers a powerful example. After abolishing its military in 1948 and investing those resources in education, healthcare and human development, it remains one of the strongest democracies in the world.
Among President Chinchilla’s many insights, three felt particularly worth sharing:
-Democracy can’t be taken for granted. Like friendship, like love, it’s beautiful and fragile, and it can erode before we notice.
-Democracy survives when it delivers a better life. When institutions stop responding to people, people stop believing in them.
-Democracy depends on ordinary people as much as on institutions. How we listen, how we treat those different from us and how we choose what to believe strengthens or weakens the whole.
President Chinchilla also told us she loved the name Moonshot because democracy itself is a bold endeavor, one every generation has to renew.
Looking out at a room filled with the next generation of leaders and the people committed to supporting them, I couldn’t agree more.
Thank you, President Chinchilla, for your wisdom, candor and faith in the next generation. And thank you to
Yemi Dele Akinyemi and the entire Moonshot team for bringing that generation together and backing their belief that a better way forward is still possible.
