John Acca reposted thisI built a tiny 8-bit video game that runs on real Workday. It started at DevCon. Our Kainos team placed in the top 10, which was incredible. One of the highlights for me was a sneak peek from Joe Lee, Nick Moores and the team: a Pokémon-style game built on Workday, and the idea resonated with me. I was heads down on the main quest, the Hackathon. So as soon as I got home, I started my side quest: built my own version with the new developer tooling! Meet Workday: New Horizons. Think Legend of Zelda meets Animal Crossing, an 8-bit pixel city where you walk around and perform real Workday actions: setting goals, giving recognition, requesting time off. All of it wired to a real GMS Workday tenant. It's a small proof of concept with a simple reminder behind it: powerful tools plus curious people equals magic. Two different experiences, but the same reminder: there’s always an opportunity to invest in yourself and in others. John Acca reacted on thisJohn Acca reacted on thisMy miscarriage was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I remember crying in the ER, alone because of COVID, texting a coworker (thankfully a woman who understood immediately without me having to say the words) because someone needed to cover for me. How will I get through this? What leave can I even take? If I take PTO, it's sudden and not in the two weeks' notice. Do I take unpaid leave? Bereavement leave? Isn't this a loss of an immediate family member? I didn’t want to tell my boss, because that would mean sharing too much about our family plans. In the end, I used PTO. But it felt deeply unfair. When I came back (only 4 days later) and could finally breathe again, I dove into research. My company (at the time) had clear policies for IVF, but NOTHING about pregnancy loss. I couldn't find anything in writing. Which meant: no leave, no recognition, no space to grieve. So I started advocating. For two years, I worked within the Women's Group to research, present, and push for change. And eventually, the bereavement leave policy was updated to explicitly include pregnancy loss. Is three days enough? Absolutely not. But it’s a start. And for me, the goal was simple: that even one employee would see that language, know they could take leave, and not have to disclose their pregnancy (or family plans) just to get a few days of privacy and space. - Policies only matter if they reflect real experiences. - Culture only matters if you are actually showing empathy to your employees. We still have a long way to go, but change starts with one voice.
