Katie Bouton shared thisLast week I had the opportunity to speak with the Network of Nonprofit Consultants (NNSC) about leadership and entrepreneurship. It was a conversation that felt especially meaningful to me, surrounded by thoughtful, like-minded professionals, including several Koya alumni. Thank you to Abe Taleb and Melissa Madzel for facilitating the fireside chat, and to Marissa Delgado and Amy Shea for cheering us on. I also co-led a session on M&A with Deb Taft at Lindauer. It was a joy to share the room with someone I’ve long admired, both for her professional work and her commitment to justice and equity. It was a privilege to share experiences and lessons learned, and equally rewarding to hear others reflect on their own entrepreneurial journeys. I left both conversations feeling inspired and deeply grateful. For the experience of building Koya with Molly Brennan, for the incredible people who joined us along the way and continue to do impactful work, and for the opportunity I have today to continue partnering with entrepreneurs as they carve their own paths. The whole day was a reminder of the value of community and staying connected to purpose. It was also a real moment of reflection for me, and one I might not have taken without this invitation. Sometimes you have to pause and recognize the ripple effects of the work, and the heart you put into your time on this spinning planet. 🧡 The right people in the right place really do change the world.

Macpherson, and Andy Sommer for joining the conversation and sharing their experiences with ALI Fellows.Katie Bouton shared thisDuring this week’s CORE session, led by Katie Bouton (ALI ’23, Founder and Managing Partner of TAVO; Entrepreneur in Residence at The Boston Foundation), our ALI Fellows and Partners are exploring pathways into nonprofit leadership. Featured panelists Molly Brennan (DSG | Koya), Deb Taft (Lindauer), Andy Sommer (ALI ’19), and Lisa H. Katie Bouton shared thisProud to have been a beta reader for Fundraising for the Rest of Us. Founders are going to get so much value from this!Katie Bouton shared thisI wrote the book I wish I had when I raised money for my first startup. Not a “how to raise VC” fantasy or a glossy “how to hustle and tell a great story” version. A real guide to raising capital while navigating bias, power dynamics, warm intros, and the invisible rules nobody explains. It’s called Fundraising for the Rest of Us, and pre-orders open today (1/27)!! Head on over to allisonbyers.com. This book isn’t for any one type of founder. It’s for anyone who has ever thought: 💭 “I don’t know what investors actually want from me in this meeting.” 💭 “I get ‘come back when…’ and the goalposts keep moving.” 💭 “My business is solid. Why does fundraising feel like a personality test?” You’ll learn how to: 👉 Think like an investor so your pitch actually lands. 👉 Build a compelling deck using my Core 10 Pitch Framework. 👉 Choose the right capital sources for your business (not just the loudest ones). 👉 Handle bias + pattern-matching without shrinking, spiraling, or pretending it isn’t happening. I didn’t write it alone. Over 100 beta readers helped shape it, and more than 20 entrepreneurs shared stories that made it sharper, more honest, and more useful. ⭐Why pre-ordering matters⭐ The book releases on April 14. Business and fundraising books are a genre where women are severely underrepresented, and pre-orders are one of the biggest levers we have. By pre-ordering the book, you will: ✅ Help us gauge demand for the print run. ✅ Help us get placed in bookstores. ✅ Get exclusive bonus material, discounts, and early access to the book. I’m especially excited about bulk orders for accelerators, university entrepreneurship centers, incubators, angel groups, and community cohorts. If you want copies for your founders, mentors, or members, comment BULK, and I’ll reach out, or DM me. 📣 SPREAD THE WORD 📣 I would *truly* appreciate your support by amplifying this post and sharing the book with your networks. The Rest of Us are most of us. We are creating companies, communities, and futures that reflect who we are. Let’s make fundraising less mysterious, less lonely, and a lot more human.

Katie Bouton liked thisKatie Bouton liked thisMy dad sent me a printer for my birthday, and it is ridonculous. Every time he visits and asks to print something, I tell him (accurately) that our printer can't handle it. So he fixed the problem the way dads do, by sending a big honking one that can handle pretty much anything. I texted him to let him know this is a serious printer, and his response was the best thing ever. When you're building something, you spend a lot of time explaining yourself. To investors, customers, randos you meet networking, friends, the dog. So there's something really special about having family who takes what you're building seriously from the start. Sometimes that looks like encouragement. Sometimes it looks like a small office printer.

Katie Bouton liked this38 years ago, Kip Hollister built this company on a simple conviction: that business could be built on real relationships, rather than transactions. This August, I stepped into the role of CEO of The Hollister Group. I didn't take this on to change what's held true for nearly 4 decades. I did it because I've spent this most recent decade watching this approach prove itself, up close, and I believe in it wholeheartedly. My plan isn't a new one – it's the same one Kip started with, applied to what's next with a crystal-clear focus: to deepen the relationships we've already built and to deliver greater impact for you, through one unified team you can rely on as a true growth partner.Katie Bouton liked thisWe are excited to share a new chapter for The Hollister Group. Phoebe Goldsberry has been named CEO. Allyson McCabe carries forward her role as President, and Kip Hollister (she/her/hers) continues as Owner & Founder. For nearly four decades, our work has been rooted in real relationships, and we look forward to continuing to support people, teams, and businesses as they grow. Katie Bouton liked thisKatie Bouton liked this“It was daunting knowing I wanted to make a positive difference but not knowing how I wanted to do that. One thing that helped me was interning in different fields to get a sense of what I liked, and what I didn’t. Internship experience is SO important because you can pivot if you decide it isn’t for you!” 💫 Today, alumna Rachel Rymaszewski ’20 (environmental conservation and sustainability) works for Prime Buchholz, an investment consulting firm based in Portsmouth, NH. “We provide our investment consultancy services to predominantly non-profits, as well as high net worth individuals. My role is to essentially help implement sustainability and diversity considerations in client portfolios as they pertain to our clients' unique missions.” How did UNH prepare you for your role now? “UNH had a number of sustainability programs that advanced my knowledge and skills beyond the classroom. I worked at the Sustainability Institute, where I helped calculate UNH’s nitrogen footprint. That really helped bolster my quantitative and data interpretation skills and proved to be instrumental in shaping how I approach problem-solving. One of the key opportunities that led to my current role came through an internship with Prime Buchholz via UNH’s Sustainability Fellowship program. Seven years later, I am running the Fellowship project on our side!” Was there a person or course that had a significant influence on you? “While I had many exciting experiences at UNH, there is one person who I owe my deepest appreciation to for shaping where I am today. I approached my internship with Prime Buchholz not knowing anything about sustainable investing or investing really at all! I was unsure about the impact that could be had compared to the more tangible scientific work I was used to in my degree. I had a complete 180 moment learning from my supervisor, Kate Dumas. It was the catalyst for my deep love and appreciation for the work I do today.” Fun fact about yourself? “My partner and I have been working to build a garden of native species – we are novice gardeners but currently house over 30 native plants in our yard! Our goal is to provide additional food sources and shelter for pollinators and other wildlife!” 🐝 Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/dvETVnPe Thanks for sharing, Rachel!

Katie Bouton liked thisKatie Bouton liked thisMaine B Corps was thrilled to offer our own celebration of 20 years of the B Corp movement last week. From just 40 B Corps in 2006 to over 11,000 today! Here in Maine, we have gone from just a handful of B Corps to over 20 today, as well as a number in our neighboring state of NH! It was also a good opportunity to reconnect to PURPOSE of the B Corp movement and look to the future. The B Lab co-founders set out with an audacious goal to fundamentally change how our economic system works, and over the last two decades B Corps have proven that you can do well by doing good. That you can put purpose and the care of stakeholders at the very heart of profitable business. That was why I got involved with the B Corp movement back in 2010, and why I'm proud to serve on the board of a B Corp. As the world faces ever more urgent and complex challenges, the idea of fundamental system change seems more relevant and urgent than ever and yet we are only at the beginning. Of the thousands of businesses in Maine ONLY 20 are B Corps. Of the millions of businesses in the world ONLY 11,000 of those are certified B Corps today. Now, with the new version standards, B Lab is calling on us all - collectively - to raise the bar for ALL business! What if the standards become the norm not the exception? What if we find ways to act together as a unified voice around the things that matter most? What can our state and the world look like if there are 25,000, 50,000, 100,000, or 1 million certified B Corps? Whether you were part of the B Corp movement from the start, you’re a newly certified B Corp just finding your feet, still exploring certification, or a long-time supporter from the sidelines, Maine B Corps invites you to imagine what we can accomplish together! Sincere thanks to Androscoggin Bank and Mascoma Bank for jointly sponsoring the event, and to one of Maine’s newest B Corps, Orange Bike Brewing Company for providing their wonderful (naturally gluten free) beer. Additional thanks to The Ecology School at River Bend Farm for providing such a beautiful venue, Bristol Seafood, Cabot Creamery Cooperative and Patagonia Provisions for adding to the feast prepared by the chef from the Ecology School with ingredients grown right on their farm. Additional thanks to Benn Marine of The Rising Kind, Fortunat Mueller of ReVision Energy, Katie Jones of Nimble Group and Jeremy Pare of Orange Bike Brewing for talking at a pre-event information session for aspiring B Corps on the value of certification. Katie Bouton liked thisKatie Bouton liked thisToday, Freedom Economy Business Association took legal action to protect $289 million in funding for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) that is at risk of expiring September 30. CDFIs help capital reach small businesses, entrepreneurs, affordable housing, health clinics, child-care centers and communities that traditional financial institutions often do not adequately serve. At today’s press conference, Freedom Economy Chair Tynesia Boyea-Robinson and lead counsel Alphonso David broke down what is at stake, why immediate action is necessary and what this case means for businesses, investors and communities across the country. Watch the full press conference: https://lnkd.in/ejQUJHHn Because businesses and investors should be able to rely on the rules Congress put in place — and communities should be able to count on the capital intended to reach them. #FreedomEconomy #CDFI #CommunityCapital #SmallBusiness

Lewis Gutsy Young Leader Award, honoring Harriet’s lifelong commitment to young people and courageous leadership. The award recognizes an extraordinary leader under 40 who has demonstrated grit, integrity, and results on behalf of environmental justice, social justice, or young people. The Alnoba Lewis Family Foundation makes a $10,000 donation in the recipient’s honor to a nonprofit of their choice. This year’s recipient, Dr. Lianne Hughes-Odom, is principal of Holmes Innovation School. She has improved student outcomes, school culture, and attendance while securing more than $3 million in investments for the school. Lianne worked with Harriet earlier in her career on the Lewis family’s Boston-based youth initiatives and considers her a key mentor. We can think of no more fitting first recipient of the award bearing Harriet’s name. Please join us in celebrating Harriet and Lianne, and the young leaders working to make their communities stronger!

5,000. That's approximately how many applicants The Chronicle of Philanthropy received for our part-time Data Entry Specialist -- in less than one week. Putting aside any commentary about the state of the job market, let's talk about how a recruiting team of one finds the right needle in an Everest of a haystack. Not with AI. Instead, I deployed a good old-fashioned Boolean search (which has no inherent bias) using only four keywords. In less than 15 minutes, I narrowed the field to a few dozen applicants and left a smaller carbon footprint in the process! The matches were satisfyingly good and yielded great diversity. The candidates were in various career stages from different kinds of organizations, yet all with the fundamental credentials. I read each cover letter and each resume and the hiring manager did the same. I will personally speak with each applicant in the first round. I am not a Luddite; technology (including AI) has its place in my work and life. But making connections is inherently personal and human: I will do my best to keep it that way.

My friends at YMCA WorkWell just published their most recent annual report, and it highlights critical trends impacting women working in the nonprofit sector. Two findings jumped out at me: 82% of people surveyed said their organization's mission resonated with them, while only 40% felt their well-being was well supported by that same organization. 1 in 3 of these workers were considering leaving either their organization or the sector entirely in the months ahead. The report highlights how many or most organizations are under resourced for the scope of the work they face, and that employees are funding much of this important work with their own well-being. That is called citizenship behaviour, and while it is wonderful, it should be above and beyond, not steadily rely on to accomplish a mission. Every time a leadership team or board signs off on a budget or a strat plan, and those strategies don't right size their goals with the reality of their workforce's capacity, they're signing off on this pattern continuing. I sometimes call this the reality vs resourcing gap. And that gap remains wide when we don't choose to close it. As long as that gap remains to be filled by employees going above and beyond, governments and other funders will continue to chronically underfund this important work in our communities. In Dr Dave Whiteside, Ph.D own words "Resource the mission, or resize it." Please take a minute to flip through this powerful report. Reshare it if you can, or send it directly to the leader of a local nonprofit in your sphere of influence. https://lnkd.in/gK2A8Yv3
