Kc Ifeanyi shared thisreposting this in case anyone in my network has any leads! Lauren Otis is one of my dearest friends and OG work buddies (shout-out to time inc., circa 2008) she's an incredible person and insanely talented. so please do let me know if you or anyone in your network might have a lead or two!Kc Ifeanyi shared thisHi LinkedIn friends, In a bit of news, due to some big changes in scope, my agency experienced a company-wide round of layoffs last Friday and unfortunately I (and a number of my hyper-talented colleagues) were among them. However! Now that I've had one week to recalibrate, revel in an all-sweatsuit wardrobe, regret going as ham as I did on Black Friday deals, and blast 'Defying Gravity' around my house no less than 1000x, I am officially ready to FLY like Cynthia Erivo. If you or anyone in your orbit happens to have brewing creative or copywriterly needs, I'd love to hear about it! If there's anyone you think would be awesome or key for me to connect with, I want to know them! If there are any juicy recommendations for amazing shows I should be watching, books I should be reading and/or any other general goodness to capitalize on with my newly *open* schedule, I want it all. Grateful to all of you for your love and good energy over the years, and I'm excited to dive into what's next.

Kc Ifeanyi reposted thisKc Ifeanyi reposted thisFrom Rare Beauty and Glossier, Inc. to DRUNK ELEPHANT and Sol de Janeiro, the most successful high-end beauty brands today have one thing in common: the backing of SEPHORA. In the $30 billion prestige beauty industry—littered with startups and influencer brands—the retailer is the indisputable kingmaker. It’s able to propel a new brand into a household name and earn a founder a multimillion-dollar exit. And if it doesn’t work out? There’s always another brand ready to take its place on the shelves. For our Winter issue cover story, Fast Company senior writer Elizabeth Segran, Ph.D. profiles Sephora North America CEO Artemis Patrick and her leadership team, exploring how the company work with brands and wields its power. The result is a portrait of one of the most dynamic industries today. https://lnkd.in/eRZX4PZmHow Sephora became the kingmaker of the $30 billion, high-end beauty industryHow Sephora became the kingmaker of the $30 billion, high-end beauty industry

Kc Ifeanyi shared thisWhen my editor-in-chief and I were conceiving this 10 Most Innovative People of the Last 10 Years concept in celebration of Fast Company's 10 annual Innovation Festival, I had Pat McGrath in my notes—but in my "long shot" column. I knew that she doesn't do many interviews A) because she's constantly jetting off to fashion show after fashion show and B) because she's said before that she's more of a behind-the-scenes kind of person. But, on a whim, I reached out to see if she'd be part of this list because when you think of innovation, it's hard to not think of Mother. Color me surprised when she and her team and agreed. It's been such a pleasure unpacking the creativity of Pat. Although she got whisked away to, yes, another fashion show and couldn't make it to New York City in-person, we were able to patch her in for a very thoughtful conversation. Here are some highlights: On how the beauty industry has changed since launching her company PAT McGRATH LABS: "In 2015, the public and the beauty consumer they were easy to dictate to. You could tell them this is the trend, this is how you have to look. But I could feel there was a passion brewing for people that wanted to make their own decisions and enjoy beauty. I just knew that people wanted to have their voices heard, and also for there to be more inclusivity. I remember myself looking for my own foundation with my mother. We found a pigment that worked for my skin tone. It was almost a celebration. Whereas now the consumer is so passionate, they want to know exactly where the product's made, what country, what are the ingredients. They can tell you the difference between all of your brushes. It's a completely different consumer, and they are inspiring everyone. It's genius." On taking runway looks to market: "I'm always looking for white spaces for products. That's what I love to do. But a lot of the time we're using products that are really brand new and about to come to market backstage. But the one thing is speed is essential, but you don't ever want the quality to suffer. So I think it's really important that everything is safe and tested. But definitely we are always teasing new products from backstage." On why her creations as a makeup artist resonate: "I really do feel that the world loves to dream. It's not an easy world that we live in. And I think that's the one thing that is beautiful about beauty and the fashion industry and everything that we do, music, everything. It's an escape and people want to dream." Kc Ifeanyi shared thisAt Fast Company's 10th annual Innovation Festival, I predicted at the top of my chat with Issa Rae that in my 10 years of interviewing on this stage, this conversation would be a highlight of my career. And I'm happy to say I wasn't wrong. I'm grateful to anyone who says I'm good at moderating, but I'm always quick to reply that it's not just me up there. I always prefer to lean into more of a "conversation" than an "interview," and cheers to Issa for leaning into that too. We covered everything from the realities of Hollywood to how she's building up her sprawling entertainment company HOORAE and her personal brand while being mindful of overexposure. Here are just a few highlights from our conversation: On the current state of Hollywood: "The landscape is hard. The market has changed a lot, and we're all susceptible to it. There's no one that's not affected by it. And a lot of the conversations even about this movie that we shot in LA is just how nothing is shooting in LA right now. And there isn't a lot of work. My email is flooded every week with people saying, 'Hey, if you have anything, I'm available.' It is hard, and it is a big, big waiting game just generally of figuring out what's going to happen to the industry. It's a scary time. And if anything, it's only just furthering my desire for control and distribution of our own networks...and to not necessarily be susceptible in the same way to the market and these decision makers who don't necessarily value or prioritize our culture." On how she's evolved over the past 10 years: "So much has changed in a great way, but I guess I would say expectation has changed. 10 years ago I was comparing my journey to a lot of my peers and just feeling like I wasn't where I wanted to be and where I was supposed to be. And then now I feel like there's almost an expectation of me, and that's a scary thing. I know I'm projecting some of it, but just being a public figure and having released works, there's just now an expectation of talent, of expectation, of presentation, expectation of showing up. There's just so many things that I feel the weight of in a way that I didn't before because nobody knew me." On spreading out but not spreading thin: "That's a big fear of mine is just the oversaturation. But because I have an eye on that, I take breaks. I like to disappear for a while. A lot of my favorites are my favorites because I miss them. I am constantly thinking about that because I do think that there's an air of specialness that has been taken away in a sense because of some of our faves just being a little bit too accessible, sharing a little bit too much, and giving too much of themselves where there is no mystery, there is no excitement." Kc Ifeanyi liked thisSo incredibly proud of our team for what we have built so far and continue to build. It is no secret to anyone that works in media, that we all inherited some obsolete processes. Whether you are on the supply side like publishers or demand side like brands and agencies, we have all looked for more efficient means of transacting business. Spacely Media is absolutely changing the game for advertisers buying premium media, and for publishers selling alignment with the most valuable content available. Kc Ifeanyi liked thisKc Ifeanyi liked thisAs Lina Khan, Federal Trade Commission chair, describes during her panel at Fast Company’s 10th annual Innovation Festival: “Imagine a family where a kid has a nut allergy being charged more for the granola bars without nuts.” That's what dynamic pricing is: the ability for a company to change the pricing of a product—that is, raise it—at a given moment. In her work as FTC chair, Khan draws both fire and praise for her view that the harms induced by antitrust behavior can go beyond consumer prices. Can you guess which PR pitch angle is most likely to get me to press the delete key? (This one is even more frustrating than "Dear Wrong Reporter's Name") Pitching me with "My client was just featured in X competitor publication; Are you interested in interviewing them?" doesn't make me feel like I need to get in on the zeitgeist, and it doesn't make me feel like this company/person is especially worthy of a story. It just makes me feel like my publication is second-string to competitors. Obviously, you can't go to NRN for the scoop every time (though you totally should), but using other news outlets as a selling point on your client will automatically make me skip to the next pitch in my inbox. There are plenty of other ways to pitch stories after your company/brand/client has already gotten press! This just should not be one of them, in my personal opinion.

"Speed is the disease of the digital age. In today’s newsrooms, pressure to publish stories at an increasingly fast rate often means that reporters are able to uncover only basic information and complete a surface-level analysis. Twenty years ago media experts were already warning that working at high speeds encourages journalists “to fall back on well-worn themes and observations—interpretive clichés.” In today’s world of digital media, this effect has been compounded." https://lnkd.in/g7gGAzKS
