So grateful for Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, for keynoting the SENT Summit: “Build Like the Saints”. Here’s what I took away from my time with him:
1. Set an integrated routine and stick with it:
Before the first day of the conference, I went to the hotel gym at 6:30am. Only one treadmill was open. An elderly man was walking quickly on the one to the left of me.
It was Tom Monaghan, in his mid-80s, wrapping up his workout as I was just starting mine.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg of his daily routine that also includes prayer, dedicated work blocks, and time with family.
2. Set big, bold dreams:
Tom revolutionized the pizza business and founded some of the most impactful faith-based organizations in recent decades.
Believe in the impossible and invite God to co-create with you.
3. When you believe in something, commit for the long-term:
Tom started building Domino’s Pizza in the early 1960s. It didn’t really hit its stride until the 1980s - almost 2 decades later.
Focus on persistent, gradual improvement and learning. You’ll have many failures along the way. That is normal and OK.
I have to add that he kicked off his remarks by saying, “I wish I had this [
SENT Ventures] when I was starting Dominos in the 1960s.” Find a community to be a part of that sharpens and challenges you to be great.
Tom had the same approach for his marriage to Marjorie of over 50 years. She passed away last year; may she rest in peace.
4. Be humble and show up.
One of the things that struck me about being with him was his gentleness and docility. People kept rushing up to speak with him.
But he took the time to listen and be present.
As part of the Summit, we had small groups that many of the other VIPs didn’t attend. But Tom did.
Here’s a guy in his 80s with every possible career success. And he shows up to an assigned small group at a conference he’s keynoting.
At the end of his keynote address, everyone immediately stood up and applauded. Regardless of what he said, the audience recognized the lifetime achievement, mission, and dedication of this servant.
Mr. Monaghan, it was an honor to host you at the SENT Summit and we are so grateful that you shared your experience, wisdom and some of yourself with us in Fort Worth. I’m grateful for your generous encouragement and presence.
