On Wednesday, Representative Chris Deluzio and Senator Chris Murphy introduced the Let Kids Play Act, a bill aimed at private equity involvement in youth sports, stay-to-play requirements, junk fees, and some of the rising costs families are dealing with across the youth sports landscape. So I sat down with Representative Deluzio and co-sponsor Senator Cody Booker to talk about it. This wasn’t a debate show or a “gotcha” interview. My goal was to help sports parents better understand why this bill exists, what problems they believe it’s trying to solve, and what it could mean for families moving forward. Whether you agree with the legislation or not, I think this is an important conversation because youth sports are becoming increasingly inaccessible for way too many families and that impacts all of us. For a one-man-and-his-dog-plus-AI startup, this was an extraordinary room to be in. DiamondMetrics sits in a narrow niche — pitching intelligence infrastructure. We make the data from tracking systems like Rapsodo and TrackMan understandable and actionable for coaches who weren't necessarily trained as data scientists. And we keep that data tied to the player, not the facility. A theme I kept coming back to was coaching effectiveness — tracking player development is one of the clearest lenses you have on it. Vermont sold out a soccer stadium three years ago that barely had a soccer scene. Vermont Green FC launched in 2022. They play at UVM's Virtue Field — a 2,700-seat college stadium. 7,000 people tried to buy tickets to the 2025 USL2 Final. It sold out in minutes. An estimated 5,000 showed up anyway. They finished the season undefeated and won the National Championship. I've watched this from close range. My son played soccer here — town leagues, high school, club — and now plays at the college level. My daughter is still in it. The competition has gotten noticeably sharper. More of their teammates are talking seriously about playing in college. That doesn't happen in a vacuum. But Vermont Green's rise wasn't built on soccer fandom. They didn't come at this from a soccer angle. Soccer was the medium. The mission was community — environmental justice, local identity, something worth belonging to. The sport gave people a reason to show up. The brand gave them a reason to stay. The ripple effect is real. University of Vermont men's program won the 2024 NCAA National Championship. @vermont clov launched to carve out a UPSL presence. Youth clubs and tournaments are at capacity. And now Vermont Green is launching a women's team in the USL W League this May — founding members of the Northeast Division. Vermont went from no serious soccer ecosystem to a model that national media is covering. Because one club decided to build a brand before they built a roster. That's the lesson. It's not about the sport. It's about what you stand for and who you're inviting in. Build the community. The wins follow.

This week a public feud emerged between New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former coach Bill Belichick. Kraft publicly stated that he “took a chance” when he hired Belichick in 2000. Belichick fired back saying he was the one that “took a chance” when he took the head coaching job. Clearly, they have a strained relationship. And, have both chosen behaviors that exhibit Low Road Leadership. Like most workplaces, football being no exception, people devote a lot of time, energy and life to the business. The phrase “it's not personal, its business” isn’t all true. Business is driven by people and relationships, and thus, can be very personal. Things can get messy. Someone mistreats you. Someone takes credit for your work. Someone gets unjustly fired. And, so forth. While these things may hurt. While these things may not be intentional. High Road Leaders don’t let it derail them. High Road Leaders: ✨ Understand that it is not about their success. It is about the success of others. They know that any big accomplishment, such as winning a Super Bowl, takes other people. And, by focusing on success being about others, create significance. · ✨ Acknowledge their humanness and give grace to others. They know that they have great days when they are soaring like an eagle. But, then other days when they wallow in the mud like a hippo. Because of that, they apologize when they have “a hippo day” and give grace to others when they have theirs. ✨ Want more for people than from people. They always focus on what benefits other people. They give more than they receive. And, the irony of High Road Leadership, is that by wanting more for others, they benefit too. However, this benefit is not their motivation. Robert Kraft wallowed in the mud like a hippo. Bill Belichick did the same in response. Low Road Leadership divides people. High Road leadership brings people together. Be a leader that brings people together in a world that divides. Because winning a Super Bowl requires too many great things from too many hard-working people to tarnish.
