That’s a bold move for grassroots development and youth engagement! 🇬🇭 President John Mahama confirmed during his nationwide “Thank You Tour” that modern sports stadiums will be constructed in Ghana’s six newly created regions, Western North, Oti, Northeast, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo, as well as in other underserved areas. The initiative is being led by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, who’s overseeing the design phase of these state-of-the-art facilities. The goal? To bridge infrastructure gaps, promote regional equity, and unlock new opportunities for sports, recreation, and talent development across the country.

Yesterday’s mic drop got me thinking about the media placements that matter for an African tech startup. It's easy to get distracted by the big legacy media brands – New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and yes, even TIME magazine. (Even though TIME is a shadow of its former self...but I digress.) They give you: • Credibility => fancy media logos on the website • Social clout => tons of social media likes • Feel good vibes => “I’m quoted in the NYT” But it’s not a winning PR strategy. It’s a mirage to make you feel good. Prestigious media doesn’t help you meet your business goals: fundraising, lead gen, and attracting the best talent. African tech startups’ target audiences (investors, customers, talent) don’t read these publications on a day-to-day basis. They don’t influence them. A media list focused on pitching 10 key outlets in tech media, trades, and financial press/wires *actually* drives long-term results, unlike a one-off NYT mention. In 2023, I had a BD call with a marketing consultant at a startup I was pitching. He was a senior marketer who had worked with one of the larger African fintechs. We couldn’t see eye-to-eye on media relations. He was dead set on pursuing top-tier media (NYT, Forbes, WIRED, etc). I pushed back. Not only can I not guarantee placements, which any ethical publicist would say, but this startup – and in fact *most* startups – aren’t of interest to legacy outlets. When has the New York Times ever covered African tech? Maybe a tangential mention during Nigeria’s Twitter ban. It’s not a part of their editorial mandate because it doesn’t interest their readers. The conversation turned into a game of verbal ping pong, rattling through different media outlets. Me: How about TechCrunch? There is also Bloomberg and Reuters. They cover finance and technology. Marketer: I’m over TechCrunch. Me: Rest of World is an excellent outlet. I can pitch the CEO/founder for a profile. Marketer: 😐 Isn’t that second or third tier? I had never felt so exasperated. I was sweating out of frustration. I finally said I’m not the PR consultant for you and said goodbye. Our expectations didn’t align. They would have been a miserable client to take on — even though I really liked the CEO/founder. My final point: don’t chase shiny media placements. It's a waste of time. Drill down on your 80/20 media list of tech media, trades, and financial press to drive REAL business results. Over and out. ✨
