In the months since, the pace of change has been remarkable. Platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Dremio, RisingWave, ClickHouse, Cloudera, Lakekeeper, Trino Software Foundation, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have delivered significant new integrations, and Apache Iceberg itself has reached version 1.10.0, introducing capabilities that reshape how practitioners interact with the format. To reflect this momentum, we are undertaking a ground-up rewrite. Our priorities include: ✅ Iceberg 1.10.0 alignment and deprecation cleanup – removing outdated recipes that no longer reflect best practices while upgrading all demos, examples, and exercises to incorporate the changes introduced in Iceberg 1.10.0. For example, Snowflake’s support for catalog-linked databases to external catalogs makes earlier object integration recipes obsolete. ✅ Ecosystem validation – testing and refining recipes across Databricks, Snowflake, Dremio, and AWS to ensure seamless interoperability with Iceberg 1.10.0. We expect this rewrite to take two to three months. 💡 Documentation is a Failure State Years ago, I heard Rob Gingell (Fellow at Sun Microsystems) share a perspective at a summit (20+ yrs ago) that has stuck with me ever since: User manuals ➡️ system is too complex or poorly designed This week, listening to Lenny's podcast with Bob Baxley on product design, I heard this articulated perfectly: "Documentation is a failure state." Think about it – the best interfaces barely need explanation. When you first used an iPhone, did you need a manual to figure out how to swipe? When you walk up to a well-designed door, do you need instructions to know whether to push or pull? Yet how often do we see: ▪️ APIs that require extensive guides to accomplish basic tasks ▪️ UIs cluttered with tooltips and help text ▪️ CLIs with man pages longer than novels ▪️ Features buried so deep they need step-by-step tutorials I've experienced this firsthand with tools like ChatGPT – while powerful, navigating features like custom GPTs and Projects often feels like solving a puzzle rather than using an intuitive interface. The challenge for all of us designing systems: Can we design interfaces and experiences that guide users naturally rather than requiring them to study first? I recently had the pleasure of a thoughtful and in-depth conversation with Sibel Bagcilar on all things Product Management. We talked through a few areas like the concept of "Balance". It's not about the compromises across various dimensions, it's about achieving the balance! We also covered a few other topics like honest and transparent conversations, building an open and transparent culture and being data driven without being data-blind. In true PM fashion, its an art and not an exact science :) A summary of the convo is here, and check out the detailed conversation in the link below! “PMs often get pulled in different directions, often with various dimensions involved. Sometimes, you may need to make a trade-off between immediate revenue, the long-term platform, and customer success. These are the sorts of things teams have to talk about all the time, and you have to make these calls. In most cases, these are thought of as compromises. It’s easy for a PM to get lost in this or fall into a trap. In my opinion, a stronger approach to take would be to think of this more as a balance. If you think about this as a balance and less of a compromise, that changes the mindset and approach that could be taken. The keyword here really is ‘balance’ — it can be across the many areas that PMs juggle daily. Balance can be across several dimensions like customer, product, business, or short-term revenue and long-term success, conflicting metrics at times, etc. The key is to balance these and find the best path. Another aspect of balance is in the linearity of decision, which is a fancy way of saying to achieve balance over time. For example, the PM can pick revenue as the goal now, and for the next feature, maybe the PM amplifies the customer experience. So, in this case, there is a balance over time.
