Growing up with entrepreneurial parents and equality consciousness running through everything, gave me a value system I've carried into every room since. 🔹 WHEN THE ROOM YOU NEED DOESN'T EXIST, BUILD IT. Launching RG + Associates in 2001 and founding the Consortium in 2004 weren't part of a master plan, they were a response to a gap in the investment industry. 🔹 FULL-CIRCLE MOMENTS ARE WORTH WAITING FOR. Becoming a Partner at Awani is the culmination of everything I've championed - helping to build an institutional-ready, private equity firm that will be known for performance, not categorization. That distinction matter. Excellence is the standard. Grateful to Kelly and PEWIN for creating this platform to elevate women in private equity. Renae Griffin shared thisRenae Griffin shared thisI got a little emotional when I saw Billie Jean King grace the stage at this year’s GCM Grosvenor Consortium - years ago I pitched an activation concept to ESPN as part of their campaign commemorating the anniversary of Title IX. While doing research I learned about King’s story which led to one of the key tenants for the idea I pitched: “If we want our girls to benefit from the courage and wisdom of the women before them, we have to share the stories.” - Shireen Dodson. This statement still holds true today and I was reminded of the significance of sharing our stories while at the conference. Here are some memorable sound bites from the two-day event: “Remember, relationships are everything. Keep learning and keep learning how to learn. Be a problem solver and an innovator.” - Billie Jean King “Stay with the dreambuilders.” - Johnita Walker Mizelle “Fearlessly demand respect.” - JoAnn Price, Fairview Capital “If you don’t believe, who else will?” - Martin Nesbitt, Vistria “Diversity generates value. An MBA from Chicago Booth and a chemical engineering degree ground my approach in rigor. Renae Griffin liked thisRenae Griffin liked thisMy father was the first elected African-American Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, serving multiple terms and helping lead the city through decades of change. Before that, he was in classrooms across Memphis—as a teacher, a principal, and eventually superintendent of Memphis City Schools. He earned multiple degrees, including his PhD. And in an earlier chapter of his life, he stepped into the ring and became a Golden Gloves boxing champion. 🥊 For a long time, I thought those were the defining parts of his story. They weren’t. He taught me not to let your environment define your future. That obstacles aren’t stop signs. That character is built quietly, through discipline and sacrifice, long before the world takes notice. I wrote my Harvard Business School admissions essay about him. When they asked who the most significant leader in my life was, the answer required no deliberation. Every venture I’ve taken—every hurdle I’ve cleared in life and business—has been shaped by my father’s influence. He turned 86 this past April. And the older I get, the more I understand just how much of who I am started with him.
