For 3.8 billion years, nature has perfected solutions through constant evolution. Nature’s blueprints have been humans' canvas of innovation and discoveries. Biomimicry is now a subject that is studies. It is taught at institutions like Arizona State University (home to the Biomimicry Center), and through programs by the Biomimicry Institute and Biomimicry 3.8. It is driving innovation across the globe. Biomimicry, as the name suggests – is basically the art and science of emulating nature’s patterns and strategies to solve human problems. To begin with — The Wright Brothers gave wings to humanity, studying the birds. They closely observed how birds adjusted wing angles to control lift and balance. This led to their breakthrough idea of wing-warping — a method to control roll during flight that became foundational to modern aeronautics. Another famous example is Velcro. A simple walk with a dog led to its invention. Under a microscope, Swiss engineer George de Mestral discovered that burrs contained tiny hook-like structures that latched onto loops in fabric and fur — this microscopic mechanism became the basis of the hook-and-loop fastening system we use today. Swiss engineer George de Mestral took inspiration from burrs that stuck stubbornly to his dog’s fur. In this case, we can say nature didn’t just inspire – it stuck! :) Spider silk is five times stronger than steel and yet more flexible than nylon. Engineers are now working to replicate this material for applications in construction to medicine, and a lot more… Honeycomb structures are some of the most efficient load-bearing designs in nature. Today, they are often used in everything from architectural concepts to aerospace engineering. Lizards climbing walls, suction…. Inspired by geckos that use millions of microscopic hair-like structures (setae) on their feet to create molecular-level adhesion, scientists are developing dry adhesives and wall-climbing robots without glue or residue. I could go on and on with the examples. But yes, biomimicry is not confined to tangible products. Concepts like genetic algorithms and neural networks have natural elements in their names. It goes without saying that biomimicry is also shaping modern tech fields like AI and robotics. Scientists are working on creating more efficient systems based on natural processes. Can Biomimicry promise a more harmonious relationship between human invention and nature and be less exploitative than the past? Einstein said, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” What inspires you in nature around you? When our car drives into the driveway, my dog inside the house does not bark. But the make of the same car, driven by a friend, not a frequent visitor, come in, she starts barking. What does it take to be a good inventor? That was one of the questions at the Inventor’s View panel during last week’s AI-Assisted Invention Summit. I was honored to join Paul Sagel (inventor of Crest Whitestrips and many other firsts at Procter & Gamble), Lenny Hirsch (Invention Engineer at Iprova), and moderator Julian Nolan (CEO of Iprova). In thinking about the characteristics of a great inventor, I see commonalities across the invention of products, services, and even conceptual models or frameworks. Four characteristics stand out: Personality, Persistence, Practical knowledge and Platform (yes, I know, they all begin with “P”–I was an analyst for too many years to break the alliteration habit 🙂). Personality: Research shows that of the Big Five personality traits, openness to experience is the one most consistently associated with innovation.* At its core, invention thrives on curiosity–the drive to ask How do I solve this problem? What if we tried this? Why did that happen? On the panel, Lenny described how his own curiosity led him first to quantum physics and then to a career in invention. Paul added that the best inventors are also highly observant and skilled at making connections. Practical Knowledge: Most inventors have a deep knowledge of the space they are working in, including technical understanding and familiarity with what has been tried before. This allows them to build on prior breakthroughs, avoid past traps, and predict potential issues in later stages of development. Persistence: Rarely does an invention spring fully formed from the mind of its creator. More often, it’s a cycle of trials, setbacks and refinements. Persistence in the face of failure is a hallmark of the invention process, and keeping sight of a worthy goal can fuel the determination to see an idea through to success. Platform: All over the world, imaginative and innovative people are coming up with amazing inventions, most of which will never enjoy broad usage or recognition. To succeed, an inventor needs a support structure to build, deliver and market their creation. That platform may be the funding and reach of a corporation, a research lab, or a startup, or, in the case of ideas, a university, a book or even a popular influencer. As with any field of endeavor, some people bring natural talent to the invention game, but practice, knowledge, persistence and the right environment end up being equally important in the long run. When people think about global tech leadership, they rarely think of Colorado. That’s a mistake. It’s a proving ground for what regional ecosystems can achieve when they align resources with national R&D priorities. The Earth and Space Systems Accelerator builds on this strength. By helping startups move from idea to commercialization (without requiring equity), we are showing how a regional hub can scale its impact to the national and even global level. MOST PROVOCATIVE ARTICLE OF 2025 ED-TECH contender, IMHO: “Dialogue at Scale: AI, Soft Skills, and the Future of Assessment.” *AI has broken all traditional forms of assessment, period. The only measure left is dialogue — direct evidence of reasoning and comprehension. *Fortunately, AI has greatly enabled evaluating dialog. Most people still see AI as text and images. But Gemini Nano is starting to “understand” the 3D world. Gemini Nano can take a flat photo and represent it in 3D space. That means it doesn’t just recognize pixels - it understands shape, depth, and perspective. This might sound small, but it’s a massive shift for content creation. Once machines can truly grasp the 3D structure of objects, it changes how we produce visuals for film, gaming, advertising, and beyond. 2D content defined the internet we know today. The next frontier is 3D—and we’re just seeing the first steps.
