🔴 BNY’s tokenized cash launch reinforces the idea that U.S. capital markets will soon operate with a fully tokenized collateral stack👇 [CONTEXT] On Friday, the world’s largest custodian, BNY Mellon, announced the launch of a service enabling the onchain representation of traditional cash. 👉 BNY Mellon will begin with "collateral and margin workflow use cases,” meaning using tokenization and tokenized deposits to enhance critical institutional workflows, including collateral management, margin calls, and intraday liquidity, before pursuing any broader ambitions in payments. A step-by-step, custodian-led approach. 🎯What will BNY’s clients be able to do? → Use tokenized cash as collateral, notably for margin purposes. → Perform intraday settlement and reconciliation, a significant step forward for position management and treasury operations. All while benefiting from the same legal protections as traditional bank deposits, including deposit-style safeguards and yield treatment, and being available 24/7. This represents a fundamental difference from what is currently developing in crypto-native DeFi. 🌐 For now, the underlying blockchain networks have not been disclosed. However, likely, the service will initially leverage the Canton Network, developed by Digital Asset, which has seen a wave of funding rounds and large-scale experiments with major financial institutions over the past two years. This week, JPMorgan also announced the deployment of its tokenized cash on the Canton Network, following an earlier rollout on Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 → Other banks are expected to follow with their own tokenized cash offerings, usable under similar conditions, including UBS, Citi, Bank of America, and HSBC. And this is where things are going to get interesting👇 🎯 One more building block toward large-scale tokenization In December, the Canton Network announced a partnership with DTCC, which sits at the center of U.S. capital markets, safeguarding more than $100 trillion in assets and processing over $3.7 quadrillion in securities transactions each year. → Initially, the partnership will focus solely on experiments involving tokenized U.S. Treasuries, before being extended to the largest U.S. equities. → In this race, Nasdaq and Coinbase are already competing fiercely, something that will only accelerate the pace of adoption. If developments continue at this pace, U.S. capital markets could soon operate with a fully tokenized collateral stack, likely unfolding first on semi-public networks such as the Canton Network. …before truly scaling on fully public blockchains like Ethereum (my take). Today, the FDIC took its first step to implement the GENIUS Act by approving a proposed rulemaking on approval requirements for FDIC-supervised banks to issue payment stablecoins through dedicated subsidiaries. The full #GENIUSAct framework takes effect on the earlier of January 18, 2027, or 120 days after primary fed regulators issue final implementing regulations. Key highlights from the proposal: ✔️ Establishes a streamlined application process for banks to seek approval. ✔️ Requires detailed submissions: #stablecoin design, financial projections, ownership structure, risk policies, redemption procedures, and an engagement letter with a registered public accounting firm. ✔️ FDIC review and decision within 120 days. ✔️ Focuses evaluations on safety & soundness - including financial resources, management integrity, 1:1 reserve backing, redemption reliability, and BSA/AML compliance - while minimizing regulatory burden and explicitly not blocking open-network (public #blockchain) use. The Depository Trust Clearing Corporation is integrating Chainlink's Runtime Environment and data standard into its Collateral AppChain platform to facilitate near real-time collateral management across blockchains and financial markets. The collaboration aims to modernize collateral mobility, improve capital efficiency and provide a unified on-chain environment for asset prices and valuations. The Collateral AppChain is expected to go live in the fourth quarter.

A really important shift captured here, digital assets are no longer “innovation lab experiments,” they’re becoming core to institutional infrastructure. What stands out most is the transfer of ownership. As highlighted by Rupert Poland and James Sullivan, digital assets are moving decisively into Group Risk, Compliance and the boardroom. That shift alone signals maturity not just of the asset class, but of how institutions are thinking about operational resilience, safeguarding and counterparty exposure. A few themes that feel particularly significant: • Regulatory clarity as the unlock — Whether it’s MiCA, the GENIUS Act, or upcoming UK frameworks, clarity is enabling action. Institutions don’t need perfect regulation; they need defined boundaries to engage with confidence. • From experimentation to embedded governance — Digital assets are no longer siloed in product teams. They’re being integrated into enterprise-wide risk frameworks, sitting alongside AI and other top-tier risk priorities. • Granular, scenario-based risk thinking — The conversation has evolved from generic cyber risk to very specific questions: detection speed, insider collusion, loss containment. That level of detail is what institutional adoption requires. • Safeguarding as table stakes — Robust client asset protection is no longer a differentiator — it’s the minimum requirement for trust. • Insurance as a governance tool — Not just risk transfer, but a mechanism for exposing weaknesses before they become incidents. What this ultimately points to is a broader transition: from accessing digital assets to operationalising them responsibly at scale. The institutions that win won’t be those experimenting fastest, but those embedding governance, transparency and resilience deepest into their infrastructure.
