Scott Schweighauser reposted thisScott Schweighauser reposted thisHow this former lawyer's hedge fund is quietly beating some of the best in the business. Former Skadden lawyer Sina Toussi's hedge fund Two Seas Capital is up 12% this year, including a jump of 5% in March when some of the top hedge funds lost billions of dollars. Two Seas Capital's jump last month was led by its long position in energy-related products manufacturer Calumet. Two Seas Capital's double-digit returns this year come on the back of a strong 2025. The hedge fund, which manages $2.5 billion, ended last year up almost 40%. Sina, who graduated from Cornell University in 1991 and from Columbia Law School in 1994, worked as VR Capital's chief legal officer before starting Two Seas Capital in 2020. Scott Schweighauser reposted thisScott Schweighauser reposted thisBorealis is pleased to share its latest research publication, Hedge Fund New Launch Landscape: 2025 Edition. Now in its fifth year, the New Launch Landscape draws on Borealis’s proprietary dataset of over 3,000 hedge fund launches since 2019 and reflects our vantage point as investors focused exclusively on early-stage managers. We view this dataset as a leading indicator of how talent, strategy design, organizational structures, and capital formation are evolving across the hedge fund industry. The 2025 report highlights several notable themes: - A sustained “post-peak” equilibrium in launch volumes - A step-change in the pipeline of launches coming off multi-manager platforms, with platforms functioning as one of the industry’s primary talent incubators - Continued growth in systematic and quantitatively oriented strategies as tooling becomes ubiquitous - Clear market signals favoring liquidity, implementation flexibility, and scalable structures

Scott Schweighauser shared thisHey Robert Morier , I think we should do “The Contest” every year. It’s all about KOMO — keeping the old man out. What say you?Scott Schweighauser shared thisSome of my favorite posts on LinkedIn are when people whose judgment I respect are out in the wild—running, moving, thinking out loud. Unscripted. Lightly edited. Very much themselves. (Though I would still love to know who had the job of holding Jon Gray’s camera during last week's snowstorm. Give that person a raise!) I’m not quite doing that here. It’s hard to offer thoughtful advice while pulling a 500m sprint on a Concept2, Inc. RowErg. But it is Friday, and this week’s guest set the stage perfectly. While discussing the dakota podcast with Scott Schweighauser of Borealis Strategic Capital Partners, LP, somewhere along the way we started talking about rowing…and doing our best to stay in the boat. Somewhere further along, we were talking about him joining a Drexel University panel on GP seeding, designed with our students in mind. And somewhere near the end, we were debating who would pay for the students’ pizza 🍕. Details are fuzzy but a 500m race emerged. Winner pays for pizza at the panel event. The Drexel University Men’s Rowing team provided the backdrop (and serious motivation). The result? Scott was fast. I need to get in better shape. Pizza was still the right call. What I’m reminded of heading into the weekend is that accepting a challenge—especially one that’s seriously uncomfortable—has a way of pulling you back into the wild. That place where the road disappears, the outcome isn’t polished, and you’re not fully in control. More often than not, that’s how you know you’re on the right path. Many thanks to Matthew Weaver, Paul Savell, and all the men and women who row for Drexel University. You make us all proud. Thank you Scott, for making this episode memorable and sharing your experiences in hedge fund investing. Thank you to Andrea Lo and Daniel Pogue, CFA, who along with Scott brought our GP seeding panel to life with their insights (our full discussoin will be released in a few weeks as a new episode). Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead. Stay warm (and keep rowing!) 🚣

Scott Schweighauser reposted thisScott Schweighauser reposted thisNEW EPISODE ALERT 🎤 Scott Schweighauser, Managing Partner of Borealis Strategic Capital Partners, LP joins us on the latest episode of Dakota Live! Don't miss this wide-ranging conversation on GP seeding, hedge fund history, and why now is such a compelling moment to back emerging managers. Scott brings decades of experience across trading, fund-of-funds investing, and early-stage hedge fund seeding. The discussion explores why emerging managers can outperform early in their lifecycle, how thoughtful seed structures create alignment, and what allocator-grade manager research and due diligence really look like in practice. The conversation also weaves in Scott’s lifelong passion for rowing—using the sport as a powerful metaphor for teamwork, trust, grit, and leadership. The alternate title of this episode was "The Joy of Discovery." Why? From sunrise rows on the Charles to building durable investment partnerships, Scott shares why having fun in the work matters, and how joy, curiosity, and discipline coexist in great investing organizations. Key topics covered: ✔️ GP seeding and strategic capital for emerging hedge fund managers ✔️ A brief history of hedge fund investing—and why the opportunity set is changing ✔️ Why “why now” matters for seeding and early-stage manager selection ✔️ Manager research, sourcing, and qualitative due diligence ✔️ Alignment, structure, and avoiding adverse selection in seeding deals ✔️ Why curiosity and enjoyment are underrated edges in long-term investing Whether you’re an allocator looking at hedge funds, a GP looking for capital, or simply curious about how investment talent is identified and supported, this episode offers a thoughtful, experience-driven look at hedge funds, seeding, and the human side of manager selection. I previously served as chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Autry Museum of the American West, where we established the Chrystina and James R. Parks Research Center for Archives, Conservation, and Collections Care, named for my wife, Xtina, and me. The California Council on Economic Education, where I have served as a longtime board member, honored me earlier this year for my support of financial education. I remain involved with the California Art Club, one of the nation's oldest nonprofits dedicated to traditional fine art, and I serve as a trustee of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. This year, my wife @xtinaparks and I are proud sponsors of CoastLines: American Prints and Drawings at the Clark Art Institute. “Focused on works by American artists depicting the eastern coast of the United States and their sojourns across the Atlantic, this exhibition explores the coastline as a site of contact and exchange, the stage for economic and cultural activity, and a terrain rich in American mythology.” CoastLines was curated by Hannah Chew, Class of 2026, of the Williams College and Clark Graduate Program in the History of Art. Xtina and I are very happy to have played a small part in bringing her exhibition to the public, live until September 27th. https://lnkd.in/gJaxe9Cn

Along with academic achievement, these awards celebrate students with a special spark: the drive, determination, leadership, and curiosity to make a meaningful impact. Rooted in a commitment to expanding opportunity, the Prize and the Fellowship give special consideration to first generation college students and those with financial need, recognizing that talent and potential exist in every background. The Fellowship goes a step further by providing domestic and international internships that help students build skills, confidence, and connections. By recognizing students at a pivotal moment in their lives, these awards affirm their potential and help open doors to future opportunity. The person institutional investors and distressed companies call when a situation requires more than passive management. But running alongside four decades of accounting, media and real estate work, there's been a parallel commitment for me: building something that outlasts the deal. In 2015, on today, August 12th, I made a $15 million gift to USC's Leventhal School of Accounting, the school that shaped my career in my earliest days, with the dedication of supporting the next generation of leaders. I am grateful for the opportunity to create a lasting impact alongside other leaders in the community. Scott Schweighauser liked thisScott Schweighauser liked thisWhen the week began, Leopold Aschenbrenner was preparing for his wedding. The plan was for a multiday celebration in Carmel, a seaside town in Northern California, with the ceremony at a Tuscan-style villa and the send-off at a spa in the forest. There would also be a pre-wedding colloquium to discuss ideas in panels and breakout sessions. The couple’s only request: no gifts. The 24-year-old investor had amassed a fortune by promising he could see into the future, building a $45 billion investing powerhouse that primarily bought stocks in the AI trade. For months, the holdings of his hedge fund Situational Awareness shot up in value, as did Aschenbrenner’s standing in the upper echelons of San Francisco’s elite. But by the time guests began to arrive, his fund was unraveling—and Wall Street was closing in. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gzew5kS4

Scott Schweighauser liked thisScott Schweighauser liked thisEveryone is writing about Situational Awareness's leverage issues this week, but I want to talk about the essay! The $225m essay. For those not following, Situational Awareness is the hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, which was forced to unwind positions last week after making some big leveraged bets on AI stocks. The fund was named after the 165-page essay he published in June 2024 and raised $225m on the back of it a month later, no trading record required. 165 pages is longer than my university dissertation. Yes, he had the track record and network, but the essay was part of the magic. Someone with 165 pages to say on a topic must be an expert. They must know something we don't! Plus: the document isn't badly written, and definitely wasn't written by AI (I read it). In the acknowledgements, Aschenbrenner thanks Nick Whitaker, a co-founder of Works in Progress, the magazine now part of Stripe, for publishing help. Whitaker's LinkedIn says he's COO of the fund. I'm a big fan of WiP's content — it's always well written and picks up on economic topics no one is touching. What all this should tell us is that people in the tech industry are still in awe of long writing and take it seriously. Long writing has an aura. And there will continue to be roles as trusted associates to tech leaders who want to bring their next book-length treatise to the masses. Remember when Anthropic CEO Amodei dropped a 20,000-word essay earlier this year? Aschenbrenner just lost most of a $45bn fund in a week. But writers still have a job. And maybe an essay can raise more money than a pitch deck. Let's get back to writing, friends.

Last weekend, I had the privilege of riding with the amazing 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 in the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 in support of Blood Cancer United. The ride was challenging, but also energizing, humbling, and very meaningful. Our team led by Kevin Shannahan set a goal of raising $500K this year. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of friends, family, colleagues, and supporters, we have already exceeded that goal, raising more than $550K together. I am very grateful to everyone who donated, encouraged, rode, volunteered, organized, and helped carry this mission forward. A special thank you to the Riders of the Storm Team for their leadership and commitment, and to Blood Cancer United for the important work they continue to advance. For me, the ride was especially personal. I rode to honor the memory of 5 people close to me, my family, and our broader TZG community who lost their lives to cancer in recent years. Sharing their stories with the team the evening before ride and seeing them included on the 2026 List of Honorees was very gratifying. Cancer changes lives. But the generosity of so many, and the progress being made through research, treatment, and patient support, gives me great hope. The fundraising effort continues, and I would be grateful to anyone who still feels moved to support the effort. Every contribution helps move the cause forward. What I've been hearing from emerging asset managers lately is simple but telling: the gap between great investment ideas and commercial success is getting wider - not because of performance, but because of structure. Distribution expectations continue to rise. Platform costs aren't easing. Operational demands require more alignment than ever. Yet the firms that create momentum are the ones willing to step back, compare notes and learn from peers facing the same challenges. That's a big part of why MMI Thrive exists - to surface honest conversations that lead to practical clarity. And as we look ahead in 2026, that clarity will matter more than ever.

Chicago Fed Financial Conditions Index: Financial conditions have basically gone nowhere for the past two months. When they tightened (higher is tighter) from the end of February to the beginning of April, the S&P returned negative 4.83%. When they loosened from April to early July, the S&P returned 13.81%. That is why this is a primary fundamental indicator you should be watching.

M&A is back—and this recovery matters beyond deal volume. As confidence returns, CEOs are pursuing growth while staying disciplined on balance sheets, which historically drives renewed interest in convertible issuance. Convertibles sit at the intersection of M&A cycles: flexible financing, lower dilution, and capital-efficient upside. When animal spirits return but pricing still matters, equity-linked structures tend to follow. Strong M&A isn’t just a signal of confidence—it’s a catalyst for the next leg of opportunity in convertibles. #CapitalMarkets #EquityLinked #Convertibles #M&A
