New research is confirming what our team at Vitale and Company has already uncovered: Perfectionist leadership might look high-performing on the surface—but it’s eroding creativity, safety, and trust underneath. A recent article in The Conversation highlights new global data showing that when leaders operate from perfectionism—especially when paired with harsh emotional reactions—teams become less creative and more risk-averse. 🧠 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥? At ICF Atlantic’s ELEVATE 2025 conference, I shared how sustainable change doesn’t start with goals, but begins with vision and emotion. Most change efforts stall not because clients lack discipline, but because we start in the wrong emotional state. When clients connect to their Ideal Self, they enter what researcher Richard Boyatzis calls the 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 (𝐏𝐄𝐀), the brain state that fuels hope, creativity, and motivation. It’s clean fuel: renewable, sustaining, and energizing. But when we rush into goals and accountability too soon, we activate the 𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 (𝐍𝐄𝐀), the brain’s stress-response mode. It’s dirty fuel: it burns hot, but quickly drains energy and focus. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚�� 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬: ✅ Begin sessions in the 𝐏𝐄𝐀 with vision, values, or purpose. ✅ Then, once the “clean fuel” is flowing, move into planning and goals. Really excited to be sharing this opportunity with my Sydney network. Alignment is my theme for 2026 and this workshop sits right at the centre of that. I'm thrilled to be partnering with two amazing ladies, Cathy Dimarchos and Marcela Acosta who both bring a unique and powerful perspective to the table around conscious decision-making and the collective impact and wisdom of conscious collaboration (among other things). I'm focussing on boundaries in my session because a lack of boundaries is typically one of the obvious symptoms of mis-alignment in someone's life. All too often, I find myself coaching women who are either in severe burnout or on the verge of it and when I dig deeper, I find a common theme of people pleasing and filling everyone else's bucket before their own. The ICF Portfolio Path is an alternative credentialing route for coaches whose learning and practice haven’t followed a single, formally accredited program. 🌍 Why do some leaders thrive in uncertainty while others lose their teams along the way? Every professional I meet whether in boardrooms in North Carolina or conferences across the United States shares a similar challenge: how do we lead people when the path ahead isn’t clear? The truth is, uncertainty doesn’t just test strategy, it tests culture. And neuroscience shows us why: when the brain perceives uncertainty, it lights up the same regions activated by physical pain. That’s why teams under unclear leadership feel more than just “stressed”, they feel unsafe. So how do leaders bridge that gap and give people a sense of stability when so much is shifting? Here are 3 keys I’ve seen consistently work in organizations navigating change: 🔑 Simplify The human brain craves clarity. Overwhelm comes when leaders offer too many messages, too many priorities, too many directions. By simplifying, you create a cognitive anchor. It tells your people: “Here’s the next step. Here’s what matters most right now.” Simplicity isn’t a lack of ambition, it’s a leadership discipline. 🔑 Communicate Silence is one of the greatest threats to culture during uncertainty. Neuroscience tells us that in the absence of information, the brain defaults to threat responses... filling the gap with fear and assumptions. Leaders who communicate frequently, transparently, and consistently reduce that uncertainty load. Even when you don’t have all the answers, saying “Here’s what we know, here’s what we don’t, and here’s what we’re doing next” builds trust. 🔑 Anchor in Purpose Purpose is what calms the storm. When teams are reminded why their work matters, it activates motivation pathways in the brain, giving meaning beyond the chaos of the moment. Leaders who connect every conversation back to purpose give their people resilience to keep moving forward. Uncertainty will always be part of the leadership landscape. You can teach a seasoned facilitator new AI tricks! When leading exec off-sites to build values, strategic goals or vision statements I admit I still prefer to go old school to generate ideas...flipcharts, post-it's, index cards, etc. But with a recent client, after the initial process of answering some questions prompts to generate thoughts, the group proposed running the flipcharts and post-its we had already created through AI to craft the value statements they were trying to build. Game changer. They had already done the thinking work that only they can do, but we cut down the time to turn their thoughts into statements they could all agree on. It still took a few rounds of AI generated ideas, and they still tweaked some of what the AI tool proposed to fit their needs, but it was so much easier and faster to get to the final outcome. Not sure if I'll make it a standard part of my process yet, but I will absolutely add this approach into my bag of tricks! I'm also curious about any other ways are facilitators using AI DURING group trainings or sessions...share your tips!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠   In a recent Hudson Institute of Coaching coaching community call, we explored William Blake's concept of "double vision." Blake, an 18th-century poet, wrote about the ability to see beyond surface appearances to deeper meaning. This really perfectly captures the value coaching brings to leaders and their organizations.   𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮. The difficult conversation. The decision keeping you up at night. The team dynamic that isn't working.   A coach brings a dual perspective: ⏩You see the immediate issue; your coach sees the developmental opportunity within it ⏩You see what needs resolving now; your coach sees the pattern that, once understood, can shift how you lead ⏩You see what's happening around you; your coach helps you see what's happening within you—and how that's shaping your team and organization   𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧. What makes a strong culture with high talent retention? New research shows systems prevail over bold proclamations and individual decision making. In the latest Harvard Business Review piece by Joseph Fuller, Matt Sigelman, Kenny Tan, and Elizabeth Tan Levy, they found that there is no standard playbook. Rather, a series of intentional and consistent actions to retain top talent through: Building deep expertise through vertical promotion Developing breadth through lateral moves Nurturing talent so effectively that the success of their former workers enhances their reputation Rather than copy these tactics, the researchers advocate for a focus on internal coherence.
