5 years ago, I thought supply chain excellence meant: -implementing the most complex systems -having every process documented to perfection -zero stockouts at any cost -moving as fast as possible -doing everything in-house Today, I know it actually means: -right-sizing solutions for each business stage -building systems that people actually use -strategic inventory that balances cash and service -moving deliberately in the right direction -knowing what to outsource and when Complexity isn't sophistication. Simplicity that works is.

The biggest misconception about supply chain leadership? That technical skills matter most. I completely disagree. Here's why soft skills are actually your secret weapon. Supply chains aren't just systems—they're networks of relationships. Every shipment involves vendors, brokers, manufacturers, customers, carriers, and logistics providers. What looks like a simple package delivery actually requires coordination between half a dozen parties, each with their own priorities and constraints. The leaders who excel aren't necessarily the ones who know every technical detail. They're the ones who can navigate the human side of these complex networks. The skills that actually move the needle: 1️⃣ Communication - translating between different stakeholders who speak different "languages" (finance, operations, sales) 2️⃣ Negotiation - finding win-win solutions when interests don't naturally align 3️⃣ Relationship building - creating trust that makes people want to go the extra mile when you need it most 4️⃣ Organization - keeping multiple moving pieces coordinated without dropping the ball Technical competence gets you in the room. Soft skills get results.

Washington State friends looking to broaden their certification portfolio - pay attention. The Washington State Library (WSL), part of the Office of the Secretary of State, launched the Washington State Certification Portal early last month - link in comments. The new online platform gives library cardholders across the state free access to professional certifications and workforce learning tools. The portal is available to cardholders from the Washington State Library, King County Library System, Tacoma Public Library, Spokane Public Library, Whatcom County Library System, Bellingham Public Library, and San Juan Island Library, with more libraries coming soon. Check it out and take advantage if you live in one of the participating counties. If you don’t live in one of these counties, have your library system email the state at certify@sos.wa.gov. Still reflecting on my time at Amazon’s L7 Development Days in Seattle this August. One of the highlights was hearing from senior leaders during the faculty panel on what it truly takes to thrive at this level. A few insights that stuck with me: From “saving the day” to “seeing the picture.” The biggest shift from L6 to L7 is thinking longer-term—anticipating risks and driving outcomes through others. Embrace ambiguity. There isn’t always a playbook. Make the best judgment call you can, and let others challenge and refine it. Scale through people. True impact comes from building capability in others, not carrying everything yourself. Lead with vulnerability. Ask questions, even about things you “should” know. Openness builds trust and accelerates growth. Protect balance. Boundaries and renewal aren’t optional—they’re leadership responsibilities. Leaving Seattle, I was reminded that growth isn’t about perfection; it’s about perspective—balancing strategy and execution, confidence and curiosity, delivery and development.
