Todd Tuthill shared thisCongratulations to Boeing for winning the F/A-XX. Back in the late 80’s we called what was then McDonnell Douglas St. Louis “Fightertown USA”. It looks like they have reclaimed that title.

Todd Tuthill shared thisWho wants to set up an AI driven local news service in their city? Check out this new product from Nicholas De LeonTodd Tuthill shared thisAnnouncing my latest product: LocalNews123.ai! So for the past few months I've been running Tucson Daily Brief and every now and then someone would email me asking how they could make their own version of the site for their home town. The truth is that I built TDB over time, brick by brick, and didn't really have a way to transfer that knowhow easily. Then in August I appeared on Intelligent Machines on TWiT.tv explaining how TDB works and was FLOODED with emails from folks asking to make their own. So I was like, "OK, I need to figure this out..." And so I did! Or at least, I think I did. My mental model here is Squarespace: we handle the infrastructure, you handle the content (with help from AI). We're in private beta right now, but here's how it will work: You sign up, type in your municipality's name ("boston," "dallas," "king county washington," whatever!), and the underlying system will go out and effectively create a version of TDB for your neck of the woods in a few minutes. You can pick one of 20-ish local news-y design templates for your site. I plan on making more templates, they were fun to put together. Pretty cool if I do say so myself! This will be a paid product when it fully launches (LLM calls are not free!) but I also plan to have a free tier for folks who want to test the waters before paying. I also plan on having a tier for institutions (read: J schools) so if that is something that interests you please reach out. I have a handful of slots left for beta testers if you want to help me stress test it. I can't make it free forever but I can offer a discount as a way of saying thanks once it's live. I haven't finalized pricing because the beta will help me gauge what real-world usage looks like. Tagging some folks who might think this is cool: Anthony DeRosa Adam Penenberg Sylvan Solloway Carrera Todd Tuthill Francisco C. Evan Hirsch Kaveh Waddell Sharon Goldman

Todd Tuthill shared thisGenerative AI can write your emails and create a video, but have you ever imagined that it could design an entire aircraft? I have, and I will show you how at SAE's AI in Military and Defense for Design and Simulation Digital Summit on September 15. It’s a free virtual event for engineers and leaders working across aerospace and defense. My presentation covers the six requirements I believe aircraft-level generative design systems have to meet, a live demo of what current AI can (and can't) do today, and where I think this technology realistically lands over the next few years — including a practical path for programs that can't expose proprietary IP to a public AI model. If you work in aircraft design, simulation, or program leadership, this one's built for you. Register at the link in the first comment. Rincon Aerospace. Matt Wasowski SAE International #SAEholodeck

Todd Tuthill shared thisLike many in Aerospace, I just watched the Netflix documentary Freefall. It raises some very concerning issues. I believe there were several serious issues at Boeing. I also believe Kelly Ortberg and his staff are correcting those issues. I am a very frequent flyer. My wife and I just crossed an ocean on a 787. I will continue to fly on Boeing aircraft. I wrote this article in 2024, a few months after the Max-9 door incident. I wrote this at 35,000 feet setting in row 13 on a SWA 737. After watching Freefall, I still stand behind everything I said. I would love to hear your thoughts on the article, and my assessment of Boeing in the comments.

Todd Tuthill shared thisStar Trek The Next Generation is set in the 24th century. That series included an episode where the holodeck was used to generatively design an entire spacecraft. Generative AI is used in many industries today, but the technology to generatively design an entire spacecraft or aircraft is not here yet. Or is it? I'll be explaining the state of the art for aerospace generative design at the SAE AI in Military and Defense for Design and Simulation Digital Summit on September 15th. I hope you'll join me for this free online summit. I'll talk about the steps needed to develop the 24th century generative design capability in that Star Trek episode. I don't think we have to wait nearly 300 years to bring this capability to life.Todd Tuthill shared thisAI is changing the way military and defense systems are designed, developed, and simulated. At the AI in Military and Defense for Design and Simulation Digital Summit, hear perspectives from experts like Todd Tuthill and Ralph Tillinghast on the opportunities and challenges AI presents for the defense engineering community. https://sae.to/4gB1EEN

Todd Tuthill shared thisThe leaders who thrive won't be the ones who dodged the storm. They'll be the ones who learned to navigate it. It’s not a storm, it’s the climate now. Great advice from John Nixon.Todd Tuthill shared thisEvery leader I talk to in the process industries is waiting for the storm to pass. Here's the uncomfortable truth: it isn't a storm. It's the climate now. 🌩️ Economic pressure, geopolitical whiplash, supply chains with trust issues—this is the operating environment, not a bad week. And "hope the fog lifts" has never been much of a strategy. So what can you control? Your data and your processes. In my latest piece for Hydrocarbon Processing, I make the case that the comprehensive digital twin and industrial AI act like a lighthouse—not by making the sea calm, but by showing you exactly what the rocks are doing before you hit them. Model the maintenance surprise, the energy price spike, the supply shortage… before it's a 2 a.m. phone call. But here's the part nobody wants to hear: a lighthouse built on messy, disconnected data just shines a bright light on your confusion. The foundation comes first—ontologies, knowledge maps, and good old FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable). Get the data right, and uncertainty stops being a threat. It becomes an advantage. The leaders who thrive won't be the ones who dodged the storm. They'll be the ones who learned to navigate it. How are you turning volatility into your competitive edge? 👇 #ProcessIndustries #IndustrialAI #DigitalTwin #DigitalTransformation #Siemens Siemens Digital Industries Software (ok... when I asked Claude to provide me an image that brings what I wrote visually together, it created this cool image. I mean COME ON?! do we live in interesting times or what!?)

Todd Tuthill shared thisMost entrepreneurs and leaders work with advisors to improve their finances, consultants for their businesses, trainers for their health, but seeing a therapist to improve their mental health is like grabbing the third rail. Maggie McCane LCSW, founder of Rehoboth Therapy & Wellness addresses the stigma around seeking help to improve you mental health in the latest episode of the Rincon Horizons podcast with Dylan Mitchell and Todd Tuthill. As we say at the top of every episode: “Our goal is simple. We want to help you lead better so your organization can climb higher.” That is certainly the goal in this episode. And conversations that lasted until they practically had to kick us out. 💯 Last week’s Phoenix after5 Tech Mixer at the Southwest Mission Acceleration Center (MAC) was a great reminder of why bringing Arizona’s technology community together face-to-face matters. These mixers create space to meet someone new, reconnect with longtime colleagues and build relationships that can lead to future partnerships, ideas and opportunities. A huge thank you to Drew Trojanowski and the team at Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub: Arizona for hosting us, and to everyone who brought such great energy to the evening! We love hearing that our after5 mixers “keep getting better and better.” We couldn’t do it without this community! 📸 Check out a few highlights from the night.

Todd Tuthill liked thisTodd Tuthill liked thisWe printed a cinder block. It was a test, and it taught us something we were not looking for. Eighteen hours, three millimeter layers, carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene, one per plate on the large format machine. The point was to see how the machine handled something big, blocky and thick walled. Here is what stuck with us. A cinder block is already designed the way additive wants things designed. Hollow cores instead of solid mass. A web through the middle where the load runs. No material sitting anywhere that is not doing work. Block makers arrived at that shape a hundred years ago for their own reasons, and it lands very close to what a careful design-for-additive pass produces today. Most of our design conversations run the other direction. We spend them taking material out of parts that were drawn solid because a mold could make them that way. The block never had that problem to begin with. Worth remembering the next time you look at a part and assume the optimization has to be invented. Sometimes it is already sitting in a supply yard. Pricing for a large part is in the first comment. #AdditiveManufacturing #DesignForManufacturing #LargeFormat

It was a humbling experience because of the breadth and depth of leaders who were also honored. I'm not much for the rah-rah, but it felt good to rah-rah. I met some people I would never meet in my normal circles, and got to hang with some friends from those normal circles. All and all a great night. Shout-out to fellow honorees Jasmine Bhatti, RN, Josh Weiss, Martijn Pierik, and Sentari Minor. It was great to see Rebecca Clyde, Nate Jack, and Matthew Clyde. Also, a big thank you to Catherine Harmon, MRED for inviting me to the Alerus table in the front row :-) Best seat in the house.

Innovative Teamwork Restores a B-2 Spirit A new Air Force case study shows what disciplined execution looks like: cross-functional teamwork, engineering rigor, and persistence turning a high-risk repair into a return to operational readiness. For aerospace and defense, the takeaway is clear: outcomes improve when decisions are anchored in verification—inspection, analysis, repeatable processes, and documented airworthiness evidence. At the AIMM Center (Ogden), CICNDT supports that same mindset through Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Non-Destructive Engineering (NDE)—helping manufacturers reduce uncertainty, rework, and downtime. #Aerospace #Defense #Engineering #NDT #NDE #Readiness #Quality

DoD Contract Alert — F-35 Sustainment & Aerospace Support Subcontractors Only This is inside the F-35 ecosystem. If you operate in aerospace maintenance, flight line support, avionics, logistics, or defense sustainment — this is your lane. ✈️ AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. – Fort Worth, Texas Contract Modification: P00008 Parent Contract: N0001922D0024 (IDIQ, CPFF) Modification Value: $9,600,963 Procuring Agency: Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) – Patuxent River, Maryland Competition: Not competed Scope: Expanded support to provide maintenance and product support services for F-35 product support aircraft, specifically supporting F-35 acceptance flights for: • U.S. Air Force • U.S. Marine Corps • U.S. Navy • Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers • Non-U.S. Department of Defense participants Performance Location: Fort Worth, Texas Completion: December 2026 Funding: No funds obligated at award; funds will be issued at the task order level. This is acceptance-flight support — meaning aircraft must meet operational readiness standards before delivery. Lockheed controls the integration lane. 🔎 Where Subcontractors Can Plug In F-35 product support and acceptance operations require highly specialized capability. Potential subcontracting lanes include: • Aircraft maintenance & flight line support • Avionics troubleshooting & calibration • Aerospace quality assurance & inspection • Tooling & ground support equipment (GSE) • Logistics & parts provisioning • Technical data & configuration management • Test instrumentation & diagnostics support • Cybersecurity & mission systems support • Engineering support for sustainment analysis • Secure facility & flight operations support services If your firm supports military aircraft sustainment, aerospace MRO, or flight operations infrastructure — this is your ecosystem. 🎯 Next Steps (Aerospace & Defense Firms) Confirm NAICS alignment in aerospace maintenance, avionics support, or defense engineering services. Ensure AS9100 certifications, quality systems, and security clearances (if required) are current. Develop an F-35 or tactical aircraft-focused capability statement emphasizing flight line readiness and compliance. Engage through Lockheed Martin’s supplier portal and F-35 program subcontracting channels. Position early — IDIQ structures expand through incremental task orders. Acceptance-flight support is high-visibility work. Primes look for subcontractors who reduce risk and protect schedule. Richelli Consulting Group tracks NAVAIR and F-35 sustainment modifications most firms overlook. We decode IDIQ structures. We identify where subcontractors actually fit. We help serious aerospace firms align inside controlled aircraft programs. If your company operates in military aircraft sustainment, avionics, or aerospace logistics — this is where informed opportunity begins. F-35 sustainment rewards firms positioned before task orders activate.
