Tom Miller shared thisFeeling incredibly grateful and honored that our BBQ documentary "Family Beef" took home Best Large Market Documentary/TV Special at the Texas Broadcast News Awards. This project started as an ambitious pitch at KXAN: a feature-length film, a year-long timeline, and countless trips between Austin and Lockhart. It required real trust and investment to bring it to life. It all paid off with hundreds of thousands of views, statewide recognition, and a theater premiere. Huge thank you to Haley Cihock for backing the vision and helping guide key decisions along the way. To our Director Eric Henrikson, Director of Photography Todd Bailey, and digital team standouts Robert Sims and Jaclyn Williams, along with everyone else who supported this documentary, this doesn’t happen without your work behind the scenes. Pretty amazing to live in a place where you can tell small-town stories like this and be recognized for it. Watch: https://lnkd.in/gvbJZetC

Tom Miller shared thisTeamwork made the dream work last week when we took our morning show on the road! The first Longhorn football home game of the season is basically a holiday in Austin, and we wanted a newscast that lived up to the hype. We had plenty of fun, but also stayed true to the news with original reporting. From Bevo’s life on the ranch to the weekly tryouts for cheerleaders, to the booming alumni businesses, our anchors and reporters brought it all. Getting the band, Hook ’Em, cheer, and the associate athletic director live on the field, in addition to traffic and weather, took a lot of coordination. By dividing and conquering, the team made it happen. Couldn’t be more proud of the KXAN News Today crew for pulling this off and getting Central Texas ready for Longhorn football!

Tom Miller shared thisOne year ago, Eric Henrikson and I had a wild idea: What if we told the real story behind Lockhart’s legendary barbecue family feuds that've shaped the "Barbecue Capital of Texas" for generations? What if we explored the town's history and culture, and timed the release with the Texas Monthly Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas list, which comes out only once every four years. Today, I’m proud to share that our feature-length documentary, Family Beef, is almost here. The official website is now live, just days before the film premieres at the Long Center and becomes available to stream. Producing a 90-minute documentary isn’t something that just happens in local news. It requires vision, time, and trust from the top down. It takes a station willing to invest in longform storytelling, and leaders who believe there’s value in going deeper. I’m incredibly grateful to have had that kind of support at KXAN. Huge thanks to our News Director Haley Cihock and General Manager Eric Lassberg for giving this project room to grow, and to our parent company for making space for innovative storytelling within a local newsroom. You can now watch the trailer and learn more about the project at: KXAN.com/familybeef #FamilyBeef #Documentary #NexstarNation #KXAN #BroadcastJournalism #LocalNewsMatters

Tom Miller shared thisYes, I’m a KXAN anchor, but before that, I was a reporter - driven by curiosity and a passion for storytelling. Anytime I get the chance to tell a truly great story, I jump at it. And this one might be my favorite yet. Meet a 10-year-old chess phenom whose talent is nothing short of remarkable. Huge shoutout to Todd Bailey for the stellar shoot and edit!

Tom Miller shared thisLoved sharing what we learned about how viewers feel about journalists and news organizations using AI.👇Tom Miller shared thisWe love how clear and direct KXAN is in this on-air segment about how their station does — and doesn't — use AI in their journalism. The newsroom was part of a recent research project where we found that 94% of news consumers want journalists to disclose their use of AI — specifically what, why and how AI is used. https://lnkd.in/gphkfpfV Thanks to Kate Winkle, Tom Miller and the KXAN team for helping us gather this data! Tom Miller shared thisKXAN News Today hit a significant milestone for the first time in decades! Our 6 a.m. hour viewership among people ages 25-54 is 10% higher than all our competitors combined, according to June Nielsen ratings. This builds on our consistent wins in the 5 and 6 a.m. time slots over the last year+. I'm truly grateful to be part of this wonderful community and work at a station that cares about and invests in its people. To celebrate, we enjoyed some breakfast tacos! 🌮 Here's to many more victories and serving our amazing viewers!

Tom Miller shared thisIn the early hours of the morning, when most people are still asleep, a special camaraderie blossoms in the world of TV news: the morning team. Fighting off the yawns and tired eyes, we rise together, bound by a shared purpose – to seek out the information our viewers will need to know when they wake up. The pressure to deliver timely and accurate information is always there, and it often falls on us to make our own major editorial decisions. This requires a level of collaboration and team buy-in that is remarkable. Without the watchful eyes of our bosses hovering over us, we rely on each other for support, guidance, and accountability. We advocate for each other's well-being, help each other grow, and hold each other to the highest standards. This spirit of teamwork has propelled the KXAN News Today team to new heights. Our recent Emmy Award for Best Morning/Daytime Newscast is a testament to our dedication, our passion, and our unwavering commitment to serving our community. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this team, where every day we strive to be the best we can be.

Tom Miller shared thisCongratulations to the KXAN Today team on the Emmy nomination! When Austin was in the dark, ice, and cold, we kept the community informed about the widespread power outages, road closures, and environmental hazards. This newscast featured nearly a dozen live interviews from first responders and officials working around the clock to keep people safe. While going from nominee to winner is not guaranteed (I’m a 5 time loser), I’m proud of our team’s accomplishments and the trust we’ve built with our community.

Tom Miller liked thisTom Miller liked thisEvery day is drastically different in this field, and this week at WBIR-TV truly lived up to that! This week started out with a (very fun) story about being a Longhorn in Big Orange Country. Then I was in court. Today I helped cover the president’s arrival in Knoxville for the Tennessee-Texas game. It’s fulfilling to take a different journey every day, learn new things and roll with the punches. Today was especially a moment of growth for me, and I’m SO grateful to be part of a team that handled this coverage with immense care. Two months in, and so much more growing to do!❤️

Tom Miller liked thisTom Miller liked thisAs someone who has spent a career in local television news, what frustrates me most is watching talented journalists pay the price for decisions they didn't make. We keep hearing about efficiency and AI, but there is no technology that can replace a reporter earning trust in a community, a photographer capturing history as it happens, or an editor crafting a story that helps people understand their world. The strength of a news organization has never been its software. It's always been its people. At the same time, we should be cautious about rushing to judgment. Like every business in America, there are organizations led by people making thoughtful, long-term investments in journalism, and others making decisions that raise serious questions. The actions of questionable leadership should not define an entire industry. The industry doesn't need less journalism. It needs leaders willing to fight for it. That means investing in people, not simply reducing headcount and hoping technology fills the gap. The public still needs credible local journalism. The question isn't whether journalism still matters. The question is whether media leadership will choose to protect the people who make it possible.

We're hiring a Hybrid Videojournalist / Video Editor, a unique role that combines weekday editing with weekend field work showcasing your video journalism skills This position is ideal for a recent graduate or someone looking to break into the industry, but make no mistake, while this may be an entry point into our newsroom, our expectations are high. We believe great journalism starts with curiosity, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to telling stories that matter. The standard is the standard, regardless of experience level. You'll have the opportunity to learn from one of the most respected photography and storytelling teams in the country while creating content for broadcast, digital, streaming, and social platforms. We're looking for someone who is coachable, dependable, eager to learn, and excited about where journalism is headed. Please include video examples of your work with your application.
