Kelly Weir reposted thisKelly Weir reposted thisLa Alma means “the soul.” For generations, La Alma-Lincoln Park has been the heart and soul of its community. As neighborhoods evolve, preserving the stories and cultural identity that define a place becomes an intentional part of our design. At La Alma-Lincoln Park, a cultural story loop connects the park’s major destinations, carrying the neighborhood’s history into the everyday experience of gathering, movement, play, and recreation. Two of those destinations are La Alma Plaza and the new playground. La Alma Plaza, the park’s signature gathering space, draws directly from Emanuel Martinez’s 1978 “La Alma” mural on the recreation center, one of Denver’s earliest surviving Chicano murals. Its shade structure takes its colors from the mural’s palette, while its arcing columns reflect the idea of a community reaching upward, an idea rooted in the neighborhood’s history of activism, cultural resilience, and collective action. The playground extends that story. Climbing towers and net structures transform the mural’s eagle into a place for play, expressing the neighborhood’s enduring spirit of youth activism and inviting future generations to build their own connection to the park. Through an extensive community engagement process during the Vision Plan and continued guidance from a Cultural Story Advisory Committee throughout design, the community helped shape how its history is carried forward. The result is a park where cultural identity is not confined to a memorial or preserved as a static object. It is woven into the places people return to every day, preserving the spirit of the neighborhood while creating space for its next chapter. #LaAlmaLincolnPark #CommunityEngagement #CulturalLandscape #DenverParks #LivableCitiesStudio

Kelly Weir reposted thisKelly Weir reposted thisConstruction and demolition materials make up 25% of Colorado’s total solid waste stream, nearly 2 million tons annually. Working alongside Denver Parks and Recreation, Livable Cities Studio saw an opportunity at Bethesda Park to divert a portion of this material from the waste stream by reimagining the extensive concrete already present on the site. Guided by an urban wild design approach, existing concrete is being thoughtfully reused throughout the park as pathways, gathering spaces, and seating. Rather than treating these materials as demolition waste, the project transforms them into landscape features that celebrate the site’s history while reducing the need for new materials. When complete, Bethesda Park will provide new opportunities for play, recreation, respite, and community gathering in the University Hills neighborhood, helping expand access to green space and recreation for nearby residents. With construction underway, we’re excited to see this vision continue taking shape. #BethesdaPark #ConcreteReuse #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #SustainableDesign #ParksAndPublicSpace #LivableCitiesStudio

Kelly Weir reposted thisKelly Weir reposted thisIf streets are one of Denver’s largest public assets, why aren’t they designed to do more for people and social connections? For decades, streets have been designed to do one thing well: move cars. But in a growing city like Denver, they need to do more. Streets are the connective tissue of our communities, and they must function as places for people, supporting walking, biking, gathering, and everyday life. Across the city, underutilized right-of-way is being reimagined as people-centered space that supports all modes while prioritizing the pedestrian experience. LCS has been working at multiple scales to help shape this shift. We partnered with the City and County of Denver Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) and Fehr & Peers to develop the Shared Streets Design Guidelines, creating a flexible framework for rebalancing streets toward people. At the same time, we’re applying those ideas on the ground, from built projects like Sun Valley Alcott Street, 39th Avenue Shared Street and Connecting Auraria to current work on the Shared Streets Conceptual Design with CONSOR Engineers and DOTI, testing shared street concepts across seven corridors citywide. From vision to implementation, we’re helping redefine how Denver’s streets function as public space, strengthening communities and creating safer, more walkable environments. #LandscapeArchitecture #SharedStreetDesign #LivableCitiesStudio

Kelly Weir reposted thisKelly Weir reposted thisAs landscape architects and planners, we have a responsibility to understand where we can make a difference related to climate change, and to hold ourselves accountable. Climate change is intensifying, bringing rising heat, flooding, and air quality challenges. As these pressures grow, risks deepen and inequities widen, with underserved communities most impacted. Our new Climate Action Plan commits us to actions that advance resilient, equitable public spaces over time. At Livable Cities Studio, climate action isn’t a one-time initiative, it’s embedded in how we think, design, and operate. Resiliency is woven into the fabric of our firm culture, shaping decisions at every scale. This plan reflects a standard way of practicing, grounded in values that guide our work day in and day out. Over time, the impact of this work shows up in lasting ways. Thoughtful design choices lead to more resilient environments, healthier communities, and stronger access to public spaces. The benefits compound year after year, particularly for communities that have historically been unfairly burdened by environmental harm. This plan is not symbolic. It outlines near- and long-term actions and internal tracking to ensure progress. We commit to checking in annually and updating the plan every five years so that accountability doesn’t fade with time. Ultimately, our Climate Action Plan is a living framework, one that evolves as conditions, knowledge, and community needs change. It reflects who we are as a firm: transparent, future-focused, and committed to embedding climate action into our culture, operations, and leadership. This work is ongoing, requiring continued reflection, accountability, and action. Everything you put your logo on represents your brand. Cheap merch says something. Premium merch says something else. Most companies buy swag. The smart ones build strategy. If your promo isn’t aligned with your goals, audience, and positioning… it’s just spend. Merch isn’t just merch. It’s media.
