- Each summer, our planet reaches an important day, a critical threshold. It's called World Overshoot Day. Imagine a plot of land with crops and livestock to support a single family. The total amount of planetary resources that the family needs to feed and cloth itself is called an ecological footprint. Ideally, they need to harvest enough to thrive no more, and that footprint would leave the land fertile enough to provide for them the next year and the next year, and every year after that. It is no different than using only the interest from your savings account to support your lifestyle. Now imagine when scientists calculate that ecological footprint for all of humanity. Wealth Overshoot Day comes when we've used all of the ecological interest for the year. Last year, that date was August the first.
