It happens every four years — "World Cup fever." With the U.S. co-hosting this summer's tournament, employers are expecting workers to call out sick on match days so they don’t miss the action. U.S. businesses alone could hemorrhage $4.5 billion in lost productivity during the five-week tournament, per one estimate: https://lnkd.in/gA5kfv2q How do you think the World Cup will impact your workplace or industry? "If there's one thing people are encouraging you not to do in the '80s and '90s when I was growing up, it is be gay." Comedy writer Jenny Hagel said that to me on Hello Monday this week. We both grew up in the 80s and both came out in the 90s. Jenny credits this with shaping her approach to risk: "Everybody told me there was one way to do this, but it turns out there's a different way and it's fine." This makes so much sense to me. Once you've learned that one of society's supposedly fixed rules isn't actually fixed, you start looking differently at all the others. Including the rules about careers. For decades, many of us were taught that there was a "safe" path: choose the stable profession, work hard, climb steadily, retire comfortably. But look around! Journalism doesn't feel safe. Tech doesn't feel safe. Media doesn't feel safe. Law doesn't feel safe. The old promise of certainty seems harder to find everywhere. One thing I loved about my conversation with Jenny is that she embraces this reality, even credits it with seasoning her. Her career has zigzagged through internships, temp jobs, writing gigs, acting gigs, and countless failures. Last week alone, she wrote 20 jokes. One made it to air. Nineteen went in the trash. And yet she radiates confidence. She keeps writing the jokes! That may be the real lesson of non-traditional careers: security isn't always about predictability. Your goal is to know yourself well enough to recognize the life you're meant to build—even when it doesn't look like the one you were handed. This week's episode is about comedy, creativity, failure, persistence, identity, and the strange freedom that comes when you stop assuming there's only one right way to live. Panic attacks don't play by the rules. Even for NBA All-Stars. When Kevin Love experienced a panic attack mid-game, it changed the way he approached his mental health — on and off the court. Kevin now relies on breathwork as one way to manage his anxiety. “I don’t think most people breathe right,” he said. “I certainly don’t. I forget to exhale.” Kevin also leans on nature, workouts and journaling to help, but knows mental health support is not one-size-fits-all. “You can’t treat two people the same way… everybody is unique and processes things differently.” What techniques help you manage stress and anxiety at work? Share in the comments as we close out #MentalHealthAwareness month. Learn more about Kevin Love’s mental health journey here: https://lnkd.in/dFEaEhNA
