From Ancient Cham To Modern Dialects
This book examines over 2000 years of language contact and change within the Chamic language family of Vietnam. It begins with a reconstruction of proto-Chamic and analyzes major phonological and morphological changes that have occurred, including the transition from disyllabic to monosyllabic words, changes to consonant and vowel inventories, and the development of tone and register systems. The author explores how Chamic languages adapted to the Southeast Asian linguistic area and were influenced by surrounding languages through long-term bilingualism. While preliminary, the analysis offers new insights into the internal evolution and external influences that have shaped the Chamic languages over the past two millennia.
