Updates — Harriet and I have been updating articles and fixing dead links. Latest is our article on mixing and matching drivetrain components, where we fixed the link to the important, deleted Art’s Cyclery page on derailer, shifter and cassette compatibility, and made other updates. We are making heavy use of the Internet Archive, which preserves pages that have been lost to link rot — so you don’t have to search for them yourself. We support the archive with donations, and you also should.

An idler is a freewheeling sprocket that can take a bicycle chain around a corner, or adjust chain slack. Derailer pulleys are the most common example. Reader Alexander Bailey has sent in suggestions to list several tire/tyre sizes which have come into use on BMX and Freestyle bicycles. Some are in widths unseen before and there is even one bead seat diameter which used to be very rare. These sizes are now included in our page on tire sizing, and its British English version on tyre sizing. I have also made a few updates to the text reflecting new trends.
The frame of my Raleigh Twenty folding bicycle collapsed, bending the upper hinge plate when the nut underneath the hinge stripped its threads or unscrewed. Though this damage seemed hopeless at first, an excellent repair proved possible without using any special bicycle tools, and a substitute nut proved to be easily available! Read about it here!
