Lindsay Lohan's new accent sounds odd, but she's following an American tradition | Mary Valle

Among fake accents put on by our countrymen – I see you, Madonna and Gwyneth – I’m going to declare her new one the best ever

Lindsay Lohan, one of the United States’ fallen angels, has been gallivanting around across the pond for a few years now, and she recently debuted a new accent. It’s not the English accent one half of her twin selves sported in the Parent Trap, nor the robot accent she debuted in her astonishing spoken interlude in Duran Duran’s low-key masterpiece Dancephobia.

Among fake accents put on by Americans, I’m going to declare her new one the best ever. What is it? She sounds like a “Euro”. She is even pausing because she can’t remember what the … how do you say … right word is in English, though it never stopped being her native language.

The explanation for October's clown sighting hysteria is staring us in the face | Mary Valle

The fear that an uncanny humanoid is stalking our children is gathering steam – perhaps because it’s actually happening in the presidential race

Creepy clowns are everywhere. Rumors of clowns are causing hysteria. There are legends of clowns getting shot. Law enforcement has had it.

It’s October in United States, so a clown panic isn’t all that odd, really; this feels sort of normal.

Farewell, Brangelina – and the dream that love can last | Mary Valle

The Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie union appeared perfect: long-term, fruitful, opposites attracting. Now it’s clear nothing can be trusted

Pack it in, humanity. Love just died.

Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. I know. I am pulling on my oversized cardigan, letting its gigantic cuffs cover the tops of my hands, and holding a gigantic cup of herbal tea. Not drinking it. I hate the stuff.

Why is a truly singular performance – like Gale Hansen’s in Dead Poets Society – something to belittle rather than to celebrate?

Dead Poets Society, that carpe diem bellow about a group of boys in a New England prep school and their teacher, Mr Keating (Robin Williams), is in production as an off-Broadway play opening next month.

It’s ostensibly a story about Neil (Robert Sean Leonard), a sensitive lad whose theatrical ambitions conflict with his authoritarian father’s preferences, and Keating, who Walt-Whitmans the boys into writing poetry and seizing the day.

The transition from summer to fall feels like impending doom | Mary Valle

I keep looking at the calendar hoping to see August’s end – let’s just start sweater and pumpkin season already – but the month does not go quickly

Maybe I feel like August won’t let go of me, but maybe I don’t want to let go of August, the Christmas of summer, with its trips to the seashore and ice-cream and deep sighs of nostalgia. I know I will have to do it. August and I need to break up, but it’s hard.

I still need to put my suitcase from summer holidays away, which I don’t want to do because it puts a final stamp on the season, even though the truth about vacations is that the minute they end it almost feels like they never happened.

The ice bucket challenge's scientific success restored my faith in fundraising | Mary Valle

I’m always wary of disease money grabs. The donation pitch can be misleading. But the viral ALS gimmick led to real change

It is absolutely thrilling that money raised by the “ice bucket challenge” – that seemingly overblown, internet-BS game parading as a fundraiser for ALS – has actually caused a real thing to happen: more than $100m in donations funded distinct scientific progress in our understanding of the disease.

This contradicts all my feelings about gimmick fundraisers, which I, and many others, usually find trite or even annoying. It can feel like money keeps getting shoveled in to the charity-industrial complex with very little in the way of progress coming out.

Dating Taylor Swift: a nightmare dressed like a daydream? | Mary Valle

As this week’s flap with ex Calvin Harris shows, current beau Tom Hiddleston should watch for signs that he’s part of Swift’s augmented reality

Taylor Swift’s most recent ex-boyfriend, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, has just been outed as not-the-writer of his hit song This is What You Came For. Apparently, although he and Taylor decided to obfuscate her handiwork by billing her as “Nils Sjoberg”, she blew a gasket when an interviewer asked Calvin if he would ever collaborate with her. Calvin said: “You know, we haven’t even spoken about it. I can’t see it happening though.”

This seems like a pretty good bluff to me, since he was discussing a secret collaboration with Taylor. Faultless, actually.

Want a vacation? Send your family away

With husband and daughter on a week long trip, I was plunged into a silent, indulgent, pantless existence, as good as any swanky retreat

My husband and daughter recently went on a week-long trip, leaving me all alone, save for two silly medium sized-dogs and a cat.

My preconceived notion of what would happen: by minute five, I would be looking around wildly, wearing a minidress, with the walls taking the shapes of hands reaching out to get me. Half an hour later, I would be huge-eyed and prowling the joint with a butcher knife, slicing invisible foes. And, eventually, myself. My family would arrive home to find happy animals gnawing contentedly on my meaty bones.

Why I hate my summer wardrobe | Mary Valle

Warm-weather clothes should be liberating, but they’re really just a zero-sum game of snaps, layers and beige stretch fabric

For a few minutes, summer feels like a golden blessing. It’s such a joy to put away my heavy black and gray sweaters and skirts, to toss my tights in a bin, to put my boots in the storage closet.

Foreboding governess no longer, I take off my socks and enjoy a moment of sweet freedom from the cold, forgetting the sartorial battle ahead. In the summertime, we are free to frolic in lighter, skimpier clothing – at least theoretically. The “freedom” of summer dressing actually entails convoluted schemes, snaps, layers and yards of beige stretch fabric – not exactly liberating.

How I quit Diet Coke, my favorite vice | Mary Valle

It doesn’t taste good, but Diet Coke gave me an identity – and an excuse to take a break. So why have I decided to finally pull the plug on the habit?

When I recently learned that intestines have feelings, too, I began wondering what their days must be like, and listening more carefully to their cries. Sometimes they are quite obvious – a bloat that says, “please don’t eat oatmeal” or a clench that says “that’s not a good idea”.

Then I felt like drinking a Diet Coke. I drink a fair amount it, at least one 20-ounce (600ml) bottle a day, if not two. But then a thought infiltrated into my brain from its snaky neighbor to the south.

The ongoing horror of cancer survivorship is a big, dirty secret, full of tests and fear, as the stereotypical survivor remains inspirationally uplifting

I recently went in for my annual cancer scans. Seven years into survivorship, I shrugged at the thought of it. No biggie, I thought. I’ve got this. Scanxiety is for losers.

I was still cocky at 8am.

Hillary Clinton not making your soul sing? How about Oprah for president?

Bernie Sanders excited many democrats, but he’s unlikely to make it to the general election. We asked writers to imagine a fantasy replacement

Hillary Clinton is quite likely to be the Democratic candidate for president. But she has been plagued throughout this primary – as she was in 2008 – by a simple problem: many voters just don’t like her. Be it sexism, Clinton-family fatigue, or serious beef with her platform, a poll out this past week showed that 56% of registered voters expressed an aversion.

Though the same poll shows Donald Trump trailing Clinton in a hypothetical vote, simply being able to win isn’t enough. There must be people out there who can excite the Democratic electorate – as Trump does many Republicans, to the establishment’s chagrin – and beat the man, to boot.

The grinning, shape-shifting Cheshire Cat, who made his literary debut in Lewis Carroll’s enduring classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Alice has been continuously read and vibrantly influential since 1865, with the Cat dipping in and out of the spotlight. He’s been having another revival as of late. The Cheshire Cat is currently the inspiration for much cosplay, fan art, complicated makeup schemes and a million tattoos, in both his cute Disney and more sinister Burton forms.
'Aquafaba': chickpea brine is a surprisingly egg-cellent baking substitute

Whipping that gloopy liquid from cans of chickpeas yields a perfect vegan egg white replacement – even if it’s still unclear exactly why it works

Photogenic, trendy meringues – macaroons and pavlovas among them – are spun out of egg whites, sugar and air, and are fundamentally untranslatable to eggless cooking. As a result, vegans, those with food allergies, and other egg rejecters have long missed out on lemon meringue pie, angel kisses and divinity.

This changed on 6 March 2015, when an American software engineer named Goose Wohlt posted a groundbreaking remark to a Facebook group called What Fat Vegans Eat.

Nigel was a mean, spiteful, cat. I don't know how I'll live without him | Mary Valle

We lived in questionable harmony for 15 years. Then, it was time to say goodbye

I had my mean 15-year-old cat Nigel euthanized last month. He was a spitfire from the get-go, a feral black kitten, the runt of the litter, whose tiny wrath was remarkable to witness. I force-cuddled him, much to his dismay. His littermates adjusted quickly well to life on the inside but little Nigel, at nine weeks old, fought as if he were actually going to defeat me.

Of course, Nigel became my cat. He followed me into the bathroom. He sat on my lap all day. Sometimes if we were apart and I looked at him, he would purr audibly.
