Think about a kitchen project: You’re holding the client’s expectations, the budget, the timeline, the trades, the lead times, and hundreds of decisions, and you’re doing it while three other jobs are running. That’s a lot to manage.
What I’ve found over the years is that a good process takes much of that weight off you. Clients tend to ask the same handful of questions on every project, just in a different order, so once you’ve built a structure for it, then you don’t have to rebuild your answers every time.
Set up a good system and the information will reach them in an order that makes sense, leaving them feeling looped in and confident while you get some of your head back for the design work.

A primary bathroom should work as great as it looks. This one does.
The steam shower has a bench, so the homeowners can actually sit and use it. The lighting is low and tucked in, so nobody’s blinded flipping a switch at 2 a.m. The toilet has its own room, and the cabinet is built and organized around what they actually reach for every day.
Pretty is easy. Functional is the part they feel.

Thymeless Pick: the Berger Chair from @americanleather
I’ve specced this chair more times than I can count, and I’ll do it again.
Clients fall for the shape (it is a good-looking chair), but I put it in the plan for more than that: parked just off the main seating area, it opens up a second conversation zone, allowing two people to drift away from the sofa and keep talking without leaving the room. After 40 years of watching how people actually live in their homes, I can tell you that doesn’t happen by luck.
A pretty chair fills a corner, and a well-placed one earns its square footage.

A client once told me the only way he could sleep after a car accident was in the recliner we’d specified for him. He clicked one button, and it moved him slowly into the one position his body could handle.

Apparently I’m a “celebrity designer” now.
The real story is what happened in that room at High Point. Designers wanted to go way beyond circadian rhythms, discussing what lights to actually specify, how lighting works with today’s technology, and who to call for the newest integrations.
You don’t need a lighting degree to answer those questions, but you do need to know enough to guide your clients to the right decisions and selections. It’s what people hire you for.

Want to know the ugliest part of a bathroom renovation? Managing it.
You’d think it was demo day, or even those before images, but it’s really in the hundreds of small decisions someone has to hold together so that no one else ever sees them.
A former client found this out the hard way. I’d managed her first project start to finish, and she handled the second one herself. We had lunch after, and she couldn’t believe how much time and coordination even a small job took.
She wasn’t wrong. Fourteen subcontractors on one project isn’t rare for me; it just doesn’t show up in the photos.
These six bathrooms look effortless now, but they took a lot of work during the part most people never post.

Why treat a drain like an afterthought when you can treat it like a decision?
The difference between a good bathroom and one that feels finished is never the big stuff; it’s whether someone cared enough to get the details right.
For example, a linear drain doesn’t collect what a round drain does. With a round center drain, makeup, skincare, and other product residue all settle in a ring around the drain. A linear drain moves water (and everything in it) straight out, so the sink stays clean.
These are the types of brands that I keep coming back to. They think like designers, not just manufacturers.

I’ve turned down a lot of beautiful furniture for being useless.
If it can’t flex for how a room actually gets lived in, like being casual enough to flop on with your kids on a Tuesday, but structured enough to impress when it counts, it’s not doing its job.
@americanleather is one of the only lines I trust to pull that off without it reading as a gimmick. It’s why they’ve stayed on my short list for years, not just my latest projects.

A laundry room should never feel dreary.
Moving laundry to the second floor at Hickory Hill changed how the whole house functions. They now have front-loaders on pedestals, baskets tucked out of sight, and a sink for hand-washing, watering plants, and filling vases.
My favorite piece in here is the LG Styler. My clients travel constantly, and being able to refresh their clothes between trips without a dry-cleaning run mattered.
For finishing touches, we gave the room something to look at: rich color and a textured tile on the back wall. Now it’s a space you actually want to walk into.

This might not jump out in the reveal photos, but it’s the future of design.
The Queen is wired with seventy-five smart switches across the house, operated by a programmable keypad in the room it serves. There’s no need for a bank of switches in every room, just clean lines and technology working in the background.
This is the part of luxury nobody photographs. You won’t notice it in a single styled shot, but it will change the way this family actually lives in their home.
And remember: the spaces that feel effortless to live in are usually the ones that take the most effort to get there.

Most cabinets are built to be replaced, but these are built to outlast the average home.
You’re getting a behind-the-scenes peek at the Pennville Custom Cabinetry factory floor, and I’m going to tell you what I tell my clients: the quality is in the parts you won’t see once everything’s installed.
This is why I bother getting on a plane to stand on a factory floor in the first place.
Anyone can read a spec sheet, but a spec sheet won’t tell you whether a company cuts corners or whether the people building your cabinets actually care. You find that out by being there to see how they finish a piece, while listening to what they’re proud of.
I put my clients’ trust on the line every time I specify a partner, so I go see for myself.

I spent the evening at the gorgeous Cabinetry Ideas showroom, presenting “The Secret Sauce of Networking” to a packed room of NKBA designers. We were spoiled with hand-prepared food, a team that poured everything into the night, and some of the warmest people I’ve met on the road this year.
This is the part of speaking I love most. The conversations after, the questions, and the designers who come up and say, “I needed to hear that today.”

∙ Check out the portfolio, but don’t stop there. Beautiful photos don’t tell you what it’s actually like to work with someone. The discovery conversation will tell you so much more than any portfolio image ever could.
∙ Honest conversations from day one matter more than you think. When both sides are upfront about budget, timelines, and expectations, the whole project runs more smoothly. Overstating or understating anything early on is where things start to go sideways.
But there’s a third piece that most homeowners never consider, and it might be the most important one of all. It’s about your role in the relationship, and I’m covering it in full on the blog.
