When picking a robot vacuum, things like battery life, navigation, dustbin size, and noise can make a big difference in day-to-day use. At the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we constantly test vacuums of all types to ensure we only recommend the best vacuums. These are the top-performing robot vacuums, covering everything from compact, budget-friendly units to high-end devices with advanced mapping and smart-home integration.
Best overall
The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra makes hands-off cleaning easier with its all-in-one dock, which empties, washes, and dries the mop while refilling detergent and water. Its smart dirt detection re-mops areas that need extra attention, and built-in pet cameras let you check in on your furry friends while it cleans. Extendable side brushes and a mop that lifts over carpets help the vacuum reach corners, edges, and tight spots for a more thorough clean.
In our trials, the S8 MaxV Ultra proved to be fast and efficient, completing our cleaning course in just under 11 minutes while effectively picking up medium and large debris on both hard floors and carpets. It occasionally nudged smaller obstacles, such as pet toys or socks, but consistently avoided collisions with larger objects.
Right now, the tested S8 MaxV Ultra is unavailable—but a nearly identical version (which connects to your plumbing and has a built-in drainage system) is on sale.
Best value
The Eufy 11S Max robot vacuum delivers high-end features, like automatic suction adjustment, at an incredibly appealing price point. Standing just under 3 inches tall, its sleek and ultra-slim design allows it to easily glide under low-profile furniture, such as ottomans and couches, tackling even the hardest-to-reach dirt.
Equipped with BoostIQ Technology, it automatically increases suction power when detecting dirtier areas. We also like that its large wheels allow smooth transitions between medium-pile carpet, hardwood, and tile, though it can't pass thresholds taller than 0.65 inches, so it may struggle with taller door ledges. Sensors on the underside prevent falls from ledges or stairs, while laser navigation ensures it maneuvers effectively without bumping into walls or furniture.
The included remote control provides added convenience, enabling you to activate spot cleaning or focus on the edges of a room. Like most robot vacuums, the 11S Max is designed to return to its charging base when the battery runs low, fully recharging itself before its next cleaning session.
Best mopping
While most robot vacuum-mop combos rely on spinning pads for wet cleaning, this Ecovacs model uses a mopping roller instead. The brand claims the roller applies 16 times more pressure than typical mops, resulting in a stronger cleaning performance. In our Lab tests, the Deebot X9 Pro Omni outperformed every other combo model for mopping, significantly lightening chocolate syrup stains and nearly eliminating clay smears.
This model impressed us with more than just its mopping performance. The robot vac proved to be a fast cleaner, and it earned excellent scores for cleaning on carpet. It cleared our two-room test enclosure in under 10 minutes, only colliding with one obstacle in the process. In our carpet cleaning assessment, it removed an average of 95% of hard debris and 90% of pet hair. While its hard-floor performance wasn't a standout, it still earned a good score, removing 86% of hard debris on a single pass. Plus, the app allows users to set the robot to make a second pass for deeper cleaning.
Best maneuverability
While most robot vacuums detect and avoid obstacles, the Dreame X50 Ultra's navigation abilities stood out. In our maneuverability assessment, it earned an excellent score for floor coverage and completed the test without bumping a single obstacle.
In addition to its stellar obstacle avoidance, the X50 Ultra has other design features that enhance its navigation. Two retractable legs help the robot traverse thresholds more easily, with the brand claiming it can climb obstacles up to 2.36 inches tall. When cleaning under low furniture, the top-mounted sensor retracts, allowing the robot to squeeze under sofas and chairs as low as 3.5 inches. During lab testing, we were also impressed by how quiet it was. It earned excellent scores in our bare-floor pickup tests, removing an average of 91.2% of debris, and it performed even better on carpet. Although it took over 13 minutes to complete our two-room test course, we think its thoroughness justifies the trade-off.
Best compact
Most of the robot vacuums we recommend are combination vacuum-mop units, self-emptying models, or both. While these features are convenient, they typically require larger charging docks to accommodate a water tank or internal dust bag. While it lacks mopping or self-emptying capabilities, the Dyson 360 Vis Nav is a compact, reliable option for anyone prioritizing high-end vacuum performance.
In our tests, this Dyson excelled at vacuuming. During our pet hair pickup tests, none of the faux fur caused clogs, and the brush bar’s near-full-width design allowed it to clean the same area in fewer passes.
The Vis Nav also impressed us with its exceptional suction power. In our carpet pickup tests, it outperformed all other models in removing heavy debris like sand. While it doesn’t have a self-emptying base, we found maintenance to be simple. The dustbin detaches easily, and a one-touch ejection button lets you quickly dispose of debris directly into the trash.
Smart features elevate its usability: The app enables room mapping, no-go zones, and scheduled cleaning. It also generates heat maps showing the dirtiest and cleanest areas of your floors, with the vacuum adjusting suction levels in real time to tackle tough spots.
Best docking station
The Eureka J15 Ultra is hundreds of dollars less than our top overall pick, but it goes well beyond basic with an 8-in-1 base that empties debris, refills water, and even washes and dries the mop with hot water, keeping maintenance to a minimum for up to 75 days. It delivers powerful suction for deep carpet and hard floor cleaning, while its flex-arm mop and rounded square body reach tight corners and edges. It also features a built-in brush that the brand claims cuts through hair 400 times per minute to prevent tangles—ideal for pet owners.
In testing, the J15 Ultra took a bit longer to complete our course map than others, but it excelled on hard floors and performed solidly on carpet. It navigated furniture with precision—cleaning between stool legs and along walls without issue—but tended to push smaller objects around.
Best quiet
If noise is your biggest concern, the Narwal stands out. It cleaned our two-room test course in just 12.5 minutes and stayed quieter than most other units, even while self-emptying into its charging base.
It navigates furniture and obstacles with ease, only bumping a few small cones in our testing setup. It easily picked up everything from stray pet hairs to both large and small debris on both carpets and bare floors.
The mopping system also impressed us (especially on dried dirt and clay soil), and the hot-water mop washing keeps pads cleaner between sessions. Sticky kitchen messes were a bit more challenging, but still improved after a cycle. On the downside, the 12mm mop lift can leave rugs slightly damp when moving from mopping to vacuuming.
Best value vacuum-mop combo
Robot vacuum-mop combos can be pricey, but the Roborock Qrevo comes at a reasonable price and has strong vacuuming power and effective mopping features. In our tests in the Cleaning Lab, it did a great job of avoiding obstacles, making it a great pick for homes with lots of furniture. It also handled hardwood floors and carpets well in our tests, effectively mopping tiled flooring and sucking up debris from carpets.
The Roborock Qrevo also has a large dust bin capacity of 2.1 liters, so you won't have to empty it too frequently. It also has an excellent battery life with a run time of up to 180 minutes.
Best docking station
The Eufy C10 is a vacuum-only robot that has a self-emptying feature, which makes cleaning up easier and less of a hassle. While it isn’t a combo like many of the new robot vacuums, which also mop, it’s ideal for someone who only needs the vacuum feature and doesn't want to spend more for all the bells and whistles. While it may not be the fanciest model, this robot vacuum does have a useful mapping system and features in the pairable app, like no-go zones and multi-floor maps.
When we evaluated this robot in the Cleaning Lab, we liked that it's shorter and less bulky in size than many of the other robot vacuums we tested. The small docking station is a great size for someone who has limited space and doesn’t want a noticeable vacuum in the room. It was also impressively quiet in our tests, so it's great if you want to run it frequently without a loud, distracting noise. However, it had a bit of difficulty avoiding obstacles, so it may not be the best for someone with tons of furniture or items on the floor.
More robot vacuums to consider
iRobot Roomba 105X Combo Robot Vacuum & Mop: This is a budget-friendly robot model that has vacuuming and mopping capabilities. It has a 3-stage cleaning system that sucks up debris and uses two different brushes to deep clean surfaces.
Shark Stratos 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop: This model is great for those with pets because its self-cleaning brushroll prevents pet hair from wrapping and tangling. The brand's CleanEdge Detect technology uses targeted air blasts and corner recognition to capture all the dust, debris, and pet hair in tight corners and along walls.
How we test robot vacuums
The Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab has been testing vacuum cleaners for over 100 years. Using standardized procedures developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and ASTM International, we dedicated nearly 300 hours to evaluating nearly 20 robot vacuums, collecting over 400 data points to score each model. Since then, we’ve tested even more units to keep our insights current.
In our 107-square-foot, two-room test enclosure, we assessed each robot’s performance in straight-line pickup and obstacle navigation on hard floors and carpet. We also evaluated their ability to maneuver under furniture, navigate tight corners, overcome bumps, and transition seamlessly between hard floors and carpets.
Beyond performance, we tested ease of use by assessing the intuitiveness of the controls, the clarity of the initial setup, and the simplicity of removing and cleaning all components after use. We also rated the user manuals for their helpfulness and clarity.
For our straight-line pickup tests on hard flooring, we spread large and small debris within a marked area proportional to the width of each robot vacuum’s nozzle. Each robot vacuum is given 10 minutes to clean, and the debris collected is weighed to determine how much was picked up. Straight-line pickup tests on carpet are conducted in an enclosed area with a mix of potting soil, sand, and rayon fibers designed to simulate pet hair. After a set cleaning time, the dustbin is weighed to measure the debris collected.
Obstacle pickup tests are conducted across both rooms of our testing enclosure, with a mix of oatmeal, orzo, baking soda, and sand scattered throughout. The robots are tasked with navigating under a couch and coffee table, crossing over an area rug, and passing through a doorway to collect debris. After cleaning, we calculate the pickup percentage by weighing the dustbin to determine the amount of debris captured.
