Having the Perfect First Kiss
Everyone pictures their first kiss as perfect, dreamy, and everything they hoped for. The reality is that a first kiss is often a little clumsy and awkward, but still dreamy and perfect anyway! All the same, it never hurts to do a little bit of preparation ahead of time. To make sure your big smooch goes off without a hitch, we talked to romance experts for their top tips:
- Dating and relationship coach Emyli Lovz says that when having a first kiss, "it's a great idea to match the other person's energy. You don't want to go in hard and intense if the other person is soft, so paying attention to their energy and matching it is important."[1]
- Dating and relationship coach David Chambers says the biggest beginner mistake is "overly fast movements... like, vigorous thrusting of the tongue, [and other] kind of jerky, fast movements." He recommends slowing down and taking your time![2]
- Dating coach Chantal Heide says, "I don't like wet and sloppy kisses. In the initial stages especially, I like it to just be light and sensual kisses. When things get more passionate, the tongue comes into play, but not in the beginning."[3]
- Dating coach Connell Barrett says that if you want to initiate a first kiss, "look for a window of opportunity to arise. That window usually looks something like this: the other person... is looking at you and they are making deep eye contact with you, their body language is leaning in and matching yours. There are pauses in the conversation, but they're not awkward, they're sexually, romantically tense. When that window arises... then that's when you lean in for the kiss."[4]
- Licensed clinical psychologist Chloe Carmichael, PhD, says, "I would advise people to not pin too much meaning upon [first kisses] because weβve all known people in both sexes that can be really super shy at first, and then even the first move can be really overwhelming, but once theyβve gotten comfortable with you physically, all the excitement can emerge."[5]
