Michelle Obama Has The Most Relatable Relationship Battle With Barack (Stars, They're Just Like Us)
Michelle Obama has revealed the most relatable relationship battle she has with Barack Obama. And it involves the "Real Housewives."
Michelle shared that she and her long-time husband don't share the same taste in TV shows and thus don't spend quality time watching the latest series together. "Oftentimes it is reality ... because when I go to TV, I just want to turn off," Michelle shared of her go-to genre on "Work In Progress With Sophia Bush." "'[The] White Lotus' is not reality, but I am a 'White Lotus'-er or I am a 'Real Housewives' person. I love the dating shows, you know. I don't agree with them all, but I love to watch. My kids will have me watching," she continued, referring to her and Barack's daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama. Michelle confirmed the trio love the U.S. and U.K. editions of "Love Island."
She also watches a few other scripted shows, including "Running Point" with Brenda Song, "Nobody Wants This," "Ted Lasso," and "Shrinking." But, unfortunately, even her non-reality favorites don't put her and Barack on the same page. "I need light. Barack and I, we sometimes argue over what we can watch jointly because he likes death and darkness," she said. Michelle likes to watch HGTV as well, whereas golf is more her husband's jam. Though not liking the same TV shows isn't a red flag we've noticed, anyone who has a partner that doesn't share their viewing habits will know it can be a struggle.
Michelle Obama and Barack Obama have learned to bond over other things
Michelle Obama has admitted there's at least one show she and Barack Obama can watch together with their daughters. She told Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that the foursome love to watch the comedy "Abbot Elementary," starring red carpet queen Quinta Brunson. "It's so fresh and thoughtful — it's so easy to sit on the couch and watch it together," she said.
But even though the couple's TV tastes are largely different, they've found other ways to bond. The former first lady has shared that a mutual love of food is one way she and Barack get quality time together. "We have dinners alone and chunks of time where it's just us — what we were when we started this thing: no kids, no publicity, no nothing. Just us and our dreams," she told People. Food was a big part of their first date, too. Albeit not in the most extravagant way. "I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb. I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate," Barack recalled in a sweet interview with Oprah.com.
This couple proves that you don't need to have everything in common with your spouse to be in a healthy, happy relationship. Sometimes, having different tastes can be a plus. As holistic dating coaches and authors Orna and Matthew Walters told Women while debunking Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's red flags, "It's the differences between two people that create the spark of attraction and keep chemistry alive in a marriage."
