Short Hair Is Hot For 2025 — Except For This One Outdated Bob Style

Short hair is dominating when it comes to the trendy haircuts you'll be seeing everywhere in 2025. Emma Stone debuted a soft pixie cut on the Golden Globe red carpet, Kim Kardashian chopped off 7 inches of her mermaid locks for a flirty flip-up bob, and Gabrielle Union is rocking a retro, voluminous bob that her stylist Larry Sims dubbed "Black Bombshell Barbie." These are just a few celebs who took a stunning leap from long to short hair, and the short hair inspo is everywhere. Yes, committing to a chop is a big change, but there's an easy trick to determine if short hair is for you. From the gamine charm of the pixie cut to the longer, voluminous Italian bob, the key to this year's on-trend short styles is soft movement.

But while short hair in general might be hot for 2025, not all short styles are created equal. Of course, no matter who you are, there are short haircuts for every face shape and every hair type. But there's one style that looks outdated on everyone, and that's the asymmetrical bob, according to celebrity hairstylist and resident hair colorist at OVERTONE, Edson Ibarra. This style features an angled, uneven look, with one side longer than the other. But in a season of short, tousled styles, it risks looking fussy and outdated.

Soft and versatile is the name of the game

The asymmetrical bob was a popular '80s style that saw a resurgence in the '00s thanks to stars like Victoria Beckham. But the choppy layers just "feel passé," explains Edson Ibarra exclusively to Women. "These looks too often feel much too structured and are without the effortless elegance that has come to define today's trends in beauty." In 2025, styling is focused on subtle choices that can be worn in a variety of ways, so you get the most bang for your buck.

Instead of asymmetry, opt for a more low-maintenance cut that can be styled in different ways and still be flattering. "Add plenty of volume so it moves and bounces and can be flicked from side to side," suggested TONI&GUY global creative director Sam McKnight for Who What Wear. If you want the drama of a drastic change, consider a softly textured pixie cut instead. Or go for the micro bob, which ends along the jawline and features a crisp finish, if you're looking for an updated style that still makes a bold statement.
