As we add warm weather inspo to our 2025 fashion Pinterest boards, there are a few accessories trends to skip for spring and summer. Versatility is the name of the game this year, as the fashion forward gravitate toward simple flattering pieces accented with thoughtfully styled details. That's why neon colors and Barbiecore are among the outdated trends you don't want to be caught wearing in spring 2025. After a decade of microtrend churn, shoppers are looking for pieces they'll wear again and again.

But with so much emphasis on the details, it's more important than ever to get them right. The right accessories can make or break a good outfit. Stylist Rachel Jimenez Penca, founder of Rachel J Styling, weighed in on the trends that don't deserve to make it onto your inspiration board this year — think: tiny bags and bulky sneakers. Instead, oversized leather bags and chunky jewelry are the perfect finishing touches for your summertime outfits.

Goodbye to teeny bags because carryalls are hot

The dainty purses that have been popular are on their way out this spring and summer. "The tiny, mini and micro bags that were only carrying a lipstick and your ID have come and gone," says Rachel Jimenez Penca. "They were a very hot trend and luxury designers jumped on it. Popular miniaturized bags like the Jacquemus Le Chiquito or the Mansur Gavriel Bonbon Bag are hardly big enough to hold an iPhone

"In 2025 we are seeing larger, more practical and easy-to-fit everything in bags that go from day-to-night," says Penca. Think enormous slouchy totes or bulky doctor's bags à la The Row — basically, anything you might have seen one of the Olsen twins carrying circa 2009. These massive bags have an effortless quality, as if you just rushed out the door carrying a bag filled with essentials and non-essentials: hair brushes, magazines, and maybe a change of clothes. Sheer scale is the most important quality of these carryalls so the Iswee Cross Body Hobo Tote or Banuce Full Grain Italian Leather Ladies Satchel both make great options for hauling all your stuff.

Delicate jewelry is replaced with chunky, mixed metals

"The thin hoops in any color metal have moved out of the spotlight," explains Rachel Jimenez Penca. "I'm seeing and recommending thicker, chunkier styles to my clients." Delicate jewelry is out across the board, from tiny charm necklaces to dainty earrings.

Instead, bolder jewelry styles are trending, from '80s statement earrings, like these shinelab Double Hoop Paperclip Drop Earrings, to Elsa Peretti-inspired cuffs. Look for button earrings, impactful broaches, and even a return of heavy-duty watches. "Huggies in multiple sizes and in both silver and gold are the modern option," suggests Penca, if you're looking for an everyday piece. These close-fitting style of hoops are small but still hefty, like these impactful Famarine Small Chunky Hoop Earrings.

But as you're selecting your chunky pieces, don't feel confined to just one metal type. "Mixing metals is still in, and I encourage everyone to stop stressing out if your jewelry doesn't completely match," says Penca. In fact, a slightly eclectic stack of jewelry is perfectly on trend.

Cold weather scarves are out in favor of silk scarves

Scarves are no longer just a utilitarian item meant to keep you warm. Bulky knit scarves haphazardly thrown around your neck or over your shoulders are out. Instead, this summer, silk scarves are trending as a way to add extra visual interest to your outfit.

For 2025, a thoughtfully placed scarf can be a great way to experiment with an extra pop of pattern or a trendy color — it would even be the perfect opportunity to incorporate 2025's signature cherry red color into your wardrobe. Look for sumptuous designs, such as RIIQIICHY Head Scarf or the MEISEE 100% Pure Mulberry Silk Scarf. It's the kind of outfit detail that makes your ensemble look intentional. So, the more creative your styling, the better. "Fold it in half and wear it over the shoulder of your blazer and keep it in place with a belt," suggests Rachel Jimenez Penca. "Tie in a square knot as a chic neckerchief or loop it around the handle of your favorite bag. Don't forget how cool Samantha from 'Sex and the City' was when she wrapped her Chanel scarf around her head."

Bulky sneakers move over for thong sandals & platform clogs

For the past few seasons, chunky sneakers have been an It Girl go-to for adding fun contrast to dresses or trousers. But while sneakers aren't going away entirely — sleek, retro-sneakers are still popular — oversized trainers are making way for more understated and bohemian shoe choices. Think: elevated flip flops and chunky platform clogs. Platform sandals, on the other hand, are an outdated shoe style that may be aging you. You can expect to see lots of variations on the Dune sandal from The Row and the platform sandals from Chloé, since both of these brands are currently some of the biggest trend drivers. Even if you don't want to splurge on these trendy designer items, there are plenty of fashion-forward alternatives, like Havianas Slim Square Flip Flops or the CUSHIONAIRE Faux Wood Clog.
