Ellucian, Inc. was formed in 2012 following the merger of two higher education software providers: Datatel, founded in 1968, and SunGard Higher Education, founded in 1983.[1]
Ellucian is the market share leader for providing administrative systems to higher education institutions. As of 2023 Ellucian served over 2,900 higher education institutions in more than 50 countries and supported administrative and academic services for approximately 26 million students.[2]
History
[edit]In 2011, Datatel and SunGard Higher Education signed definitive agreements to combine businesses and operate as a new holding company focused on serving education institutions. In 2012, the transaction was finalized and the agreement cleared the U.S. Department of Justice review, resulting in a new entity called Ellucian.[3][4]
In 2015, private equity firms TPG Capital and Leonard Green Partners acquired a majority stake in Ellucian, which was then acquired by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners in 2021.[5]
In April 2022, Ellucian acquired Arizona-based CampusLogic, a financial aid software provider.[6]
Operations
[edit]Ellucian is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. It provides enterprise resource planning and CRM software including student information systems, college operations and data analytics tools, along with advisory and management consultation to higher education institutions. [5]
Ellucian received the 2021 Gold Stevie Award in the International Business Awards category for best education cloud-based system.[7] In 2022, it was a recipient of the TITAN Business Awards in the Education Solutions category.[8]
