I was recently on an iPhone call with someone who isn't in my contacts, and I needed to send them a photo via iMessage. However, I ran into two frustrating UI issues on the active call screen:

  1. No option to send an iMessage to the active caller directly from the call screen.

  2. Couldn't copy the phone number in order to paste it into the iMessage app.

Because of this, I had to ask the person to dictate their number to me while I typed it manually. Due to poor call quality and typos, it took three attempts to get it right.

Is there an easier workaround for this?

Top right on the call screen is a circled lowercase i symbol. When you tap the symbol, you should see a contact card which is blank except for the phone number. That card also contains buttons for creating a contact, sending a message, etc.

(At least this is how it works in iOS 18. I haven't tried iOS 26 yet.)

  • Note that in iOS 26.3 I didn't see that i symbol in the upper-right corner during an active call with an unknown contact. The procedure I followed was: More ... button > Contact Card > Message icon > Choose phone number > Attach photo and send. Commented 13 hours ago
