Why ASC Matters

The world is eating more seafood. Aquaculture already provides more than half of the aquatic animals we eat – and its role is growing.

The bigger the role of farmed seafood, the greater the need for proven performance. ASC is setting the standard for farmed seafood through science-based requirements backed by a transparent assurance framework, all independently verified across the supply chain.

  • More than 3 billion people rely on seafood for at least 20% of their protein intake. Transforming aquaculture means increasing production while addressing impacts on habitats, water, biodiversity, welfare and the resources used to produce feed.
  • Hundreds of millions of people depend on the seafood sector for work. Transforming aquaculture means improving workers’ rights, providing safe working conditions, and respecting surrounding communities.

Built for Farmed Seafood

Farmed seafood requires standards built for its unique challenges. Thousands of farmers, scientists, conservationists, and other experts continue to collaborate, strengthening what works today and shaping what seafood farming needs next.

HOW ASC BEGAN
“The certification process was demanding, but it has strengthened our farm and our team. We are extremely proud to be the first to achieve this certification and to help set a benchmark for the sector.” Gontran de Ceballos, Sales Manager at Lubimar
“We are proud to have achieved ASC certification, but we understand it’s only the start; to maintain it we will need to further improve the ingredient sourcing together with our suppliers.” Devi Seafoods Feed Mill
“ASC certification plays into everything that we do on the farm. We’re already working to extremely strict standards, but it adds an extra check and balance.” Ivana Šimunović, marine biologist at Cromaris
“We’re proud to work with ASC. The assurance that underpins certification means our customers can be sure that when they buy ASC-labelled seafood, they are getting exactly what they expect.” Sainsbury’s
