Miki Reynolds’ career is a masterclass on why staying open to the weird, unplanned moves are often the smartest career bets you can make. In my latest episode of Good Job!, produced in partnership with Robert Half, we talk how Miki moved from climbing the corporate ladder to building a career centered around a mission she cares deeply about: expanding access to entrepreneurship for underrepresented founders. From entertainment and software development to launching General Assembly’s downtown LA campus, co-founding Grid110, and now venture investing at Slauson & Co., Miki has built a career that proves a non-linear path can be your greatest advantage. She shares how she turned a broad career background into a useful “Swiss Army knife” skillset, why mission-driven work does not have to mean sacrificing ambition or income, and how one cold email helped set her on a completely new path. We chat about: - Why mission-driven work is much bigger than just nonprofit work - The value of community, curiosity, and creating roles that do not yet exist - How to tell the story of a career that does not look linear on paper Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gkYiCcr5 I am so proud of this conversation and series, it’s been a labor of love! I hate the career advice “follow your passion”. It comes from a good place. But "follow your passion" might be the most short-sighted advice in the career space, because it assumes the excitement you feel for a hobby will automatically carry over into every part of turning that hobby into income. It won't. Loving something and building a business around it are two completely different jobs. In my latest Good Job! interview (part of my ongoing series in partnership with Robert Half) I sat down with the incredible Gaby Dalkin to talk about what gets left out of the aesthetic version of building a business around something you love. Gaby is the founder of What’s Gaby Cooking, a cookbook author, chef, and food creator. She’s one of the OG food and lifestyle media brands that has over 1 million loving followers. Her empire spans original recipes, retreats, CPG products, content, brand partnerships and restaurants, but she didn’t build it overnight. On paper, you see someone deeply passionate about cooking and food. But that view can remove the slow, tactical work Gaby put in to get there. She first started on BlogSpot while in culinary school, spent years working as a private chef, and built the business step by step. Her career is a masterclass in testing ideas, asking for the opportunities you want, and building real trust with an audience. In this episode, we chat about: - How to monetize your “passion” before pursuing it full-time - Why multiple income streams can create resilience and reduce burnout - How Gaby learned to say no, then ask for better opportunities - What people get wrong when they quit their 9-to-5 Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gtYRUKgm Gaby brings so much honesty to a career path that’s known for being glossy or easy. I left this conversation feeling so inspired and affirmed that work can still be unglamorous or hard, even when you’re building something you love. There’s more interviews on the way, so if you enjoy this, follow Robert Half and @hannagetshired to catch the next one.

Anna Mackenzie's path to a 6-figure portfolio career is what she's described as "ultra-squiggly". Today, it spans consulting, mentoring, digital products, writing and education. On the surface, it's the epitome of successful self employment, but the journey to reach this point was nothing clean. In the inaugural episode of the Good Job! interview series, produced in partnership with Robert Half, we dive into what it actually takes to turn your existing experience and career skills into into multiple income streams and new professional opportunities. If you want more ownership, autonomy, earning potential, learning, flexibility and growth out of your career, Anna breaks down how to restructure from one salary to multiple-income streams. We cover: • The romanticized myths of portfolio careers • How Anna rebuilt after her business revenue dropped to $0 • What she’s learned about turning your experience into offers, landing clients, and scaling your services Watch the full episode on Youtube: https://lnkd.in/gfQX4p9H I am so beyond thrilled to launch this series. Is it ok for a hiring manager to contact a job seeker's coworkers for the scoop on the candidate... WITHOUT giving the candidate a heads up? 😬 In this edition of Market Moves from #RobertHalf, we're finding the line between due diligence and gossip. Also on the docket: 💻 Remote job listings are way down this year. Is in-office back for good? 📍 The top 10 cities where hiring is happening 🤷 Why 6 in 10 employers are struggling to find qualified employees (and what to do about it) Let's go:

I’ve been sitting on this one for months. For a while now, I’ve had this idea: interview people whose careers didn't move in a straight line, and actually get into the how. I want to get to the root of their decision-making: why they jumped at certain opportunities and passed on others, the risks they tolerated to carve their paths, what it all cost them, the career advice they'd give you if you were lucky enough to land them as a mentor. How they got where they did, and everything they learned along the way. When the team at Robert Half approached me to co-produce an interview series exploring non-linear careers, it felt serendipitous. And I am over the moon to announce: the series launches next week! We’ve got conversations lined up for you with: - A career coach who reaches over a million people a day, on what it actually takes to find fulfillment at work, and what's working in a brutally competitive job market - The woman who was championing portfolio careers before it was a buzzword, on navigating the highs and lows of self-employment and building multiple income streams that actually work together - A beauty founder who locked onto one dream early and built toward it without distraction, on what that kind of conviction actually looks like in practice, not just in the outcome - A food creator who built an entire business out of the hobby she loved, and how she stayed true to her values the entire way - A venture capitalist and investor who took a 50% pay work on creating a change she believed in, and whether it paid off …and a few more I can’t wait to share. They all come from completely different corners of ‘careers’, but talk to enough people who’ve built something they believe in and the pattern is impossible to miss: there’s no single blueprint for a meaningful career Whether you’re actively job hunting, plotting your next move, or looking for that spark of career inspiration, this series definitely has something for you. I cannot WAIT to share this with you. First episode drops next week on Robert Half's Youtube and my Substack (subscribers, keep an eye on your inbox). See you then!

Is working for 8 hours straight REALLY the best way to get things done? 🤔 In this edition of Market Moves from #RobertHalf, we're looking at microshifting, aka letting professionals organize their days to be most productive. Also on the summer agenda: 👋 Why 55% of Gen Z employees are looking for a new job before the end of the year 🤖 Everyone falls into 1 of 3 mindsets when it comes to AI. Which one are you? 🏖️ How to fix PTO culture so that your teams actually take vacation and perform at their best.
