October 1 marks the start of Circular Economy Month. ♻️ A circular economy is about more than reducing waste. It’s about designing products and packaging with their full life cycle in mind, keeping valuable materials in use, and building systems that allow those materials to be recovered and used again. For that system to work, alignment matters. Federal approaches to plastic packaging and provincial and territorial Extended Producer Responsibility programs need to work together so that packaging design, collection, and recycling systems support the same goal. Alongside the broader goal of a more sustainable future, consumers should benefit from clearer information about what can be recycled and greater confidence that materials placed in the right stream can actually be recovered and recycled. Throughout October, FHCP will highlight the collaboration, innovation, and practical solutions helping move Canada closer to that goal. FHCP Associate Member Environics Analytics marked 20 years of EAConnect at The Carlu in Toronto last week and we were glad to be part of it. Congratulations to the whole EA team on two decades of putting data to work for Canadian business. FHCP EVP, Errol Cerit, P.Eng. joined a panel with Kevin Lacey of Environics Analytics, Mike Ljubicic of Nielsen IQ Canada and Julia Roumani of Nestlé Canada on a simple premise: there is no such thing as "the Canadian consumer." Multicultural growth, GLP-1 adoption and generational shifts are reshaping demand household by household, while discount retailers, online grocery and third-party delivery are changing how and where people shop. The panel dug into how geodemographic and behavioural insights can sharpen decisions on pricing, assortment, channel and marketing. Better understanding of Canadian households is good news for the people who shop them, and it helps manufacturers and retailers deliver what families actually want. Thank you to Kevin, Mike and Julia for a sharp conversation, and to Environics Analytics for the invitation. @Environics Analytics @NIQ @Nestlé Canada #EAConnect2026 #CanadianConsumer #CPG

I am still soaking up last week’s incredible #PlantForward on the Prairies Conference. Thank you to the over 250 people who joined Protein Industries Canada in celebrating innovative Canadian food companies, sharing expertise and planning for what we need to do next as a sector. I had the opportunity to moderate a panel with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada Deputy Minister Lawrence Hanson and Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada FHCP CEO Michael Graydon. Canada’s new National Food Security Strategy gives us an important opportunity to think differently about the strength and resilience of our food system and the important role food production and value added agriculture play in it. The opportunity is now. Thanks for the candid discussion and thoughtful insights as we work together across government and industry to #MakeItHere. #PF26

Fresh from Protein Industries Canada's #PlantForward conference in Saskatoon, FHCP President and CEO Michael Graydon argues that food deserves a place at the centre of Canada's nation-building agenda, and that our goal should be making the products the world wants, not just growing the ingredients. What needs to be true for Canada to become one of the best places in the world to make food? It's a question I put to the room at Protein Industries Canada's Plant Forward conference in Saskatoon this week, and one I think belongs at the centre of Canada's economic agenda. Ottawa is talking seriously about nation-building. Food should be part of that conversation, not an afterthought to it. I've written more about it below. Curious to hear how others would answer. #CdnAg #FoodManufacturing #CdnEcon

This week, PBFC, a division of Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada FHCP, joined members, industry leaders, and partners in Saskatoon for Plant Forward on the Prairies. 🌱 The conversations highlighted opportunities for Canada’s plant-based food sector, from expanding into global markets and responding to evolving buyer expectations to strengthening domestic food production and value-added agriculture. FHCP’s Michi Furuya Chang, MHSc, RD moderated a discussion on emerging markets, diversification, and buyer expectations, while FHCP CEO Michael Graydon joined a fireside chat exploring Canada’s National Food Security Strategy and opportunities for Canadian food production. The conference also offered a valuable opportunity to strengthen PBFC’s partnerships with Protein Industries Canada and Pulse Canada and our shared support for the growth of Canada’s plant-based food sector. A highlight has been seeing so many of our members in person, hearing what they’re working on, and better understanding the priorities shaping the sector. #PlantForward #PlantBasedFoods #FoodInnovation #CanadianAgriculture Anna Laul Earth's Own Food Company
