Canadian manufacturers shouldn’t be penalized for manufacturing in Canada. The whey protein industry was already facing global supply-and-demand pressures and significant ingredient cost increases. Now, Canadian manufacturers importing essential whey ingredients from the U.S.—ingredients that aren’t produced domestically at the required scale or specifications—are facing an additional 50% tariff. Meanwhile, comparable finished protein products manufactured in the U.S. can enter Canada without the same duty.
