INIA is making progress in developing Fusarium-resistant banana varieties The National Institute for Agricultural Innovation (INIA), part of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), reported on advances in banana Fusarium research during a technical meeting for the project "Development of an early warning system for Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense, the pathogen behind banana and plantain wilt, and a biological approach to control it," an initiative promoted by Peruvian and Japanese institutions and funded by the "Scientific and Technological Research Association for Sustainable Development" (SATREPS). The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized the technical meeting in Lima. Extreme El Niño could cost Peru's agricultural export sector nearly $1.5 billion in losses in 2026–2027 In August 2026, the Multisectoral Committee overseeing the National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (ENFEN) increased the likelihood of an extreme El Niño during summer 2026–2027 to 62%. A month earlier, they had placed the likelihood at 38%, according to Official Communiqué No. 15-2026 of August 28. The El Niño Coastal Index (ICEN) for July was 3.42, surpassing the 3.0 threshold that classifies it as extraordinary. NOAA estimates a 69% chance it will be the most extreme event since 1950. The historical comparison has now shifted from 2023–2024 to 1997–1998. Peru begins its second ginger season with lower export volumes The Cooperativa Central Alta Montaña, which exports organic ginger from Peru, has begun its second seasonal campaign, the year's highest-volume campaign. Onion powder opens new opportunities for diversifying Peruvian cultivation Peru produces about 590,000 tons of onions annually, with Arequipa contributing 61% of that total. Despite this, most of the onions are still sold as fresh produce. Jorge Niño de Guzmán, an expert in productive development, sees this as an opportunity left unexploited: "We have the raw material. But we continue to sell onions mainly as a raw material."
