Want to know how to find the best talent in mining? The best talent is not typically looking at job boards (where most mining companies first look). That of course is not to say if you are looking at job boards you aren't a top candidate. But - most of the time, the best talent is engaged and busy with their current project. Or they are realizing it is time for a change for xyz reason and their first step is to talk to a trusted resource. A person who either A. Can point them in the right direction as a trusted industry colleague. or B. Someone who is a known, trusted source of opportunity. In this market, when word gets around that a top candidate is looking, they are often picked up quickly. Before they may have had the chance to see your job posting and even consider it. On that note, thank you to all the very kind folks who have been recommending to their network to speak with me as they begin to explore new opportunities. Recently I have had many messages from top mining folks saying they were recommended to speak with me regarding opportunities in the market. Industry colleagues are sharing their experience working with Starboard Recruitment. This time of year is a particularly busy time with these types of conversations. The chain of hiring mistakes I see so many mining companies make in this market: > They post roles to a job board with no real management strategy. > They get overwhelmed / don't get the results they hoped for. > They hire a HR generalist to manage recruitment. > HR and Recruitment are not the same thing. > They think the lack of delivery is due to a competitive market alone, not a bad system in place. > They waste hours of time and energy navigating the hiring process, interviewing the wrong candidates, and digging into their own networks as best as possible (until that runs dry). [This can create a bad impression in the market and negative downstream affects] Job boards will only expose you to a fraction of the market and require a tremendous amount of time to filter through. What I recommend: Leveraging an experienced recruitment partner who actively reaches out to the specific people who would be best for the roles (including those who are employed and who wouldn't have otherwise known of your opportunity). Utilizing the right, trusted partner who is a subject matter expert is key for best consistent results. [Do not get sold by an Account Manager from a firm, ask to speak with the actual recruiters who are working on your file.] Going this path will: > Expose you to the entire market and the best options. > Allow for prescreening/preparation of candidates, saving you otherwise wasted time. > Allow the recruiter to get candidates excited and bought-in to the opportunity as much as possible before entering the interview process. > Allow for support during the offer negotiation process (very useful in this market with multi offer situations). > Provide detailed notes on each candidate including motivations, compensation target, culture fit, etc. Interested to learn more and get insights into the hiring landscape? I’m putting the hospital gown back on. I’m proud to share that I’ll once again be running the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon in a hospital gown to raise funds for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Thanks to the extraordinary care I received at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, my stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis is now a thing of the past. I have been in remission for more than three years, and I’m on a mission to keep paying it forward. Through my first two marathon attempts, we've raised more than $130,000 for cancer research and patient care. That is a massive milestone and far beyond where I ever thought this would go. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make it possible. Now, let’s keep it going. On October 18, I’ll be taking the start line for another 42.2 kilometres, wearing the gown I wore during cancer treatment. I’m running because the next breakthrough depends on what we do today. Currently searching for a unique role in the mining technology sector. Looking for senior candidate with a strong background in Process / Metallurgical Engineering who has experience/interest in a business development role. This is with a top mining technology company with very good funding behind them. Candidates will need to be able to work closely with owner teams to help them get the most value from the technology, understand the benefits, and support through implementation. Travel to customer sites required. Ideally this person is located in Vancouver, BC. Open to candidates across North America.
