Today we’re releasing the 2023 F-List. It’s the most comprehensive, up-to-date, global picture of the agencies working for fossil fuel polluters ever assembled. This year’s F-List shows all the agencies that aren’t heeding the dire warnings that it’s time for change.
The 2023 F-List includes only work done for polluters in 2022 and 2023, during the hottest years in human history. We found 294 agencies with 500 different contracts with fossil fuel polluters, on every continent and including nearly every holding company.
Here are the big takeaways:
The holding company with the most fossil fuel contracts is
WPP, with 55, despite their global net zero pledge. Holding company
Omnicom is second, with 39 contracts.
Interpublic Group (IPG) has 22,
Publicis Groupe 10,
Havas and
dentsu 5 each, and
Stagwell none.
The holding company agency with the most public fossil fuel contracts is
Ogilvy, with at least 7, including the
API - American Petroleum Institute,
bp,
Petrobras, and more. Agencies with at least 6 contracts with polluters include
OMD Worldwide,
Hill+Knowlton Strategies,
GRACosway Pty Ltd,
DDB, and
IPG Mediabrands.
Pitch Digital Agency is the independent agency with the most fossil fuel contracts, with 22 contracts concentrated in the Canadian tar sands industry.
For added measure, we also broke down the sustainability policies of the world’s largest communications firms who have fossil fuel contracts to show all the ways that they’re undermining their climate goals, and the goals of their other clients by working with fossil fuel polluters. We found that WPP, Omnicom, Interpublic Group, Publicis, Dentsu, and Havas are all making their clients’ sustainability agenda harder by collaborating with the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies.
Thanks to the Clean Creatives South Africa team, we also document how Edelman’s climate policy continues to fail to cultivate trust. Last year CEO
Richard Edelman said they wouldn’t work with clients who support a huge oil pipeline project in Africa, the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline. But at the same time as they were making these claims they were celebrating work for
TotalEnergies - the company that owns the pipeline. 🤔🤷♂️
Our goal with this report is to continue providing transparency about the work agencies are doing for fossil fuel polluters. This information is important for employees, clients, and people in their job search who do not want to be associated with polluters.
Together we will shape the future of creativity and climate change, and we’re so grateful for the community's continued support, and for our partners at
Comms Declare for helping us assemble the F-List!
