Julia Kirouac, CNP shared thisI didn't quite understand that time moves at warp speed when you have a kid, until I had one. Can't believe Its already that time of year again for #CHFA in Toronto! Its the only weekend of the year I have a social life! Yay! (Sad but true) We will be under Blume Naturals aisle at booth 1130. We will have both nud fud Inc. and @wildonesorganics exhibiting! Come say hi! (I need the social interactions)

Julia Kirouac, CNP shared thisThere is only one reason why young girls go to California… 🫣 Is what I was told by a customs agent when I was 20. (Coming from Toronto) No sir, there are two reasons. I’m here for the sex work AND Expo West! 😝 Soooooo excited to be back after a 7yr hiatus. I came to Expo every year from 2012-2019 (even winning a coveted NEXTY) but, took a hiatus when I had my son. I missed the energy, the snacks and the sore feet! I will be doling out my snacks for my two companies @nudfud and @wildonesorganics from the show floor, because of booth costs (IYKYN) Come say hi if you see a very tall lady! Seeking investors to chat with! #expowest

Julia Kirouac, CNP posted thisHow bad will Health Canada’s new front-of-pack (FOP) warning label policy be for public health? Pretty bad. As a Nutritionist and food manufacturer, I understand the intent: push Canadians toward healthier choices and pressure industry to improve food quality. That goal is necessary. But this policy misses the mark and risks doing real harm. Here’s why. These warnings will not meaningfully change behaviour for consumers who regularly buy ultra-processed foods. A “high sugar” symbol on soda or ice cream isn’t shocking, it’s expected. Where this policy will have impact is on the natural and better-for-you food category and not in a good way. Health-seeking consumers do read labels. They trust government signals. When they see warning symbols on healthy foods made from nuts, seeds, coconut, dairy, or meat, foods with naturally occurring fats, confusion and fear set in. When in doubt, these nourishing products will be avoided by consumers. An example of a warning? A bag of raw almonds? No warning. Roast them and add a pinch of salt? 🚨 Warning for high in saturated fat... This inconsistency undermines the credibility of the entire policy. If Health Canada were serious about public health, this would be all-or-nothing, not selectively punitive and clearly favouring certain sectors and lobbies. Meanwhile, ultra-processed foods can often reformulate their way out of warnings using chemical workarounds. That’s not public health. That’s nutritional theatre. Treating naturally occurring, whole-food sat fats like junk food ignores decades of nutritional science and risks repeating the low-fat mistakes of the past. Once again, we miss the magic and wisdom of nature and how whole plant compounds work together in a way we have yet to understand. Instead, we’ve dragged naturally occurring fats in nuts, seeds, coconut, dairy, and animal products (or even naturally occurring sugars in fruit) into the same penalty box as junk food, when they are made convenient, or in a non-single ingredient format. To policymakers: If the goal is real health outcomes, focus on added sugars and sodium, not naturally occurring nutrients. Reward whole foods, fibre, and food quality, not loopholes. Public health deserves better than fear-based labels and blunt thresholds. It deserves nuance, consistency, and science. Health Canada tried to simplify nutrition, but in doing so, they oversimplified biology, behaviour, and food systems. This policy mistakes nutrient thresholds for health, and warnings for education. To the natural food industry: We cannot stay quiet. If we don’t collectively push back, clean, minimally processed foods will continue to be penalized, while ultra-processed products game the system and consumers get duped, or worse, even sicker from these policies. Do you agree? How do you think these policies will impact health and the industry?

Julia Kirouac, CNP posted thisDoes anyone else feel like Linkedin has just become one big circle jerk? I don't want to sound overly cynical, I'm just so sick of: - the posturing consultants - the government officials posting stats to justify their jobs and programs that did nothing for entrepreneurs, or the industry they are overpaid to serve - the people too scared to post anything against an employer, or influencer in fear of retribution but, they support these sociopaths anyway in the comments (stop, its okay to just say nothing) - lying founders trying to project confidence or positivity Did I miss anything else? Am I alone? 😝

Julia Kirouac, CNP shared thisExcited to have been chosen to head to NYC Dec 11th to connect with fellow Founders and Funders in the pre-seed food space by StartupCPG. Wild Ones Organics will be on full display and ready to rock! Sadly there is not much happening in Canada these days for food funding (more posts on that to come) so, like many others, I am looking southward. Its also my first time going to NYC since Feb 2020! I can't wait to re-connect with a city I lived in long ago and see what new treats and wellness trends have taken root. NYC, here I come! https://lnkd.in/g5zYEx84 #foundersandfunders Startup CPG

Julia Kirouac, CNP shared thisExcited to be headed out to #CHFA again! Booth 2153 is where I'll be. Love seeing the ocean, mountains and so many familiar faces. I will be sampling Wild Ones baby/toddler snacks (our first B2B show) and of course all our favourite NUD snacks (LOTS of chocolate and crackers). IYKYK for NUD we have: 🍠 Vegetable crackers (Grain-free, seed-oil free, functional and gut-friendly) 🌱 Seed-based crackers (Canada's only low-carb, GF, and nut-free seed cracker) 🍫 chocolate covered fruit (our allergen-free, sugar-free, 2-ingredient) 🍌 superfood banana bread-like crisps (really tastes like banana bread and only 4-5 ingredients) 🇨🇦 All handmade in Canada in our own factory and 100% woman-owned 🦾 For Wild Ones: We will debut our 3 gut-friendly snacks that are organic and the least processed in the category! Ready to ship nationally. Come say hi!

Julia Kirouac, CNP shared thisI just had another baby this weekend. 🤰 (Not literally, but sort of) After 1yr+ of prep, I am so excited to share my new company Wild Ones, officially launched at The Toronto Baby Show this past weekend... and we sold out! We sampled to 1000's of parents, and their babies and the response was wild. Our gut-friendly, grain-free, organic, locally made snacks kept mom and baby happy and we heard things like: "I can't believe she chose this over ice cream!" "I LOVE these ingredients and what stores can I buy you at?" As a mom and nutritionist that had a kiddo with sensitivities and gut-issues, none of the processed foods in the category were up to snuff for my little one, which is why I launched these. (and I have soooo many more awesome products to come for babies that I am excited to make!!!) If you are a retailer/grocery buyer, I'd love to chat and see how we can nourish babies with the best and a CANADIAN option for your shelves. Let's break the cycle of ultra processed food eaters that starts with this age group and get them gut-healthy with the cleanest, whole foods. Reach out for order inquiries, request a sample, or sell sheet, or just to say "hi". Also, if you know of any buyers I should connect with, please tag them! We are shipping coast to coast! Things are about to get WILD ;p #Launchweekend #Soldout #MomFounded #WildOnes #TorontoBabyShow #OrganicSnacks #BabyFood #CPG #BetterForYou #GutHealth

Julia Kirouac, CNP liked thisI just got back from the Costco supplier meeting. It feels good to be partnered with a company that shares so many values with my own. My main takeaways are: +the old playbook would be to increase door count in mass & natural and then approach Costco. now, costco wants to launch new items and brands and jump on trends quickly. +we all knew this but Costco pays their employees above market wages and they are rewarded with happier employees and less turnover. +costco is growing faster than their competitors. Costco also has significantly less sku’s at around ~3800 per warehouse +costco cares about sustainability and will listen to you about reducing packaging. For example, Kirkland cashews used to be in a round jar. In 2006 they moved to a square jar and this resulted in 4.7 million lbs of less plastic per year. +costco thinks ai will enable employees not replace them. +we all benefit from Costco’s stringent audit procedures even if we don’t shop at Costco since they audit the whole facility Which one was the most surprising to you? #costco #CPG

Julia Kirouac, CNP liked thisJulia Kirouac, CNP liked thisToday ONOIN officially turns 1 On this day last year I announced that I had left my previous role in the CPG industry to launch my own brand in the convenient cooking space. There are no words to describe all the emotions I have felt this past year: excitement, anticipation, anxiety, frustration, just to name a few. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows is pretty much a daily occurrence as an entrepreneur. Being a Founder is easily the most rewarding, yet toughest challenge I have faced (maybe other than being a Dad to two rambunctious young boys, IYKYK) However, getting to build this company with my wife and children along for the ride is something I will always be grateful for. Their love and support gives me the motivation and encouragement to keep building and to show them what is possible with perseverance, dedication, and hard work. The same goes for my parents, who have supported my vision from day one (and spend countless hours driving from store to store to support ONOIN in the field with merchandising and demo support) -- it means more to me than you will ever know. Being in the trenches day in and day out is taxing both mentally and physically -- which is why it is so important to pause and reflect on the journey and how far you have come. In one single year, I took ONOIN from a bootstrapped brand with no "pre-launch hype" or celebrity backer into over 800+ retail locations across many different stores, now stretching coast to coast. Thank you to all of our earliest retail partners for taking a chance on us. Seeing those empty shelves, re-orders, and spectacular demo results means we are building something real, that helps solve an unmet need in consumer's lives. Recognition from Food Network, Bon Appetit, Yes Chef Group, and winning a Shelfie Startup CPG ain't too shabby either. I cannot wait for this next chapter of ONOIN's growth as we continue to expand our retail and Food Service footprint (more to come on that later) -- and to show everyone there is an easier way to cook delicious, easy, healthy meals at home without the effort or tears!! Last but not least -- to all the friends, colleagues, peers, that have supported me with a purchase, conversation, advice, introductions, it is beyond appreciated. Please know I truly cannot thank you enough for all the likes, shares, comments etc. PLEASE go pick some up today if you still have not tried it; I promise you won't be disappointed -- Check our store locator for a location near you!! Pictured: A small snapshot of the behind-the-scenes of ONOIN. And asking for a friend, but is child labor illegal if they are your kids? 😉 🧅 🚀

Julia Kirouac, CNP liked thisJulia Kirouac, CNP liked thisEvery first-time founder gets treated like crap. Dismissed. Told their idea is crazy. Questioned at every turn. Until they prove it isn’t. And if you start with money or some other privileged situation, keep it to yourself or be prepared to pay more for everything. It doesn’t increase your odds of CPG success. Serial founders can look like they have it easy from afar, but a lot of that is because everyone wants a piece the second time around. Investors want in. Vendors want the business. Advisors want to help. And plenty of people will try to charge more because they assume you can pay it. Neither path guarantees success or failure. Do your thing. Grind away. Pay your dues. Prove it.

Julia Kirouac, CNP liked thisJulia Kirouac, CNP liked thisCanada doesn't have a startup or talent problem. It has a risk problem. We say we want unicorns, then punish risk-taking at every stage: 1️⃣ Pre-seed: Founders pitch "big ideas," investors say "show traction." There is no real pre-seed market in Canada.* Founders raising their first check don’t get Canadian capital. They get on a plane to SF. Pre-seed is a dead zone. Angels want traction. Funds want metrics. That’s not pre-seed; that’s a priced seed round with expectations. So our best founders raise in the U.S. and stay there (Dallas Price). 2️⃣ Series A: Banks offer loans, but some 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 founders to personally guarantee them. If you’re building a VC-backed startup, personal guarantees on capital loans are absurd. It punishes risk-takers for doing exactly what the ecosystem says it wants—swinging big. Founders are being asked to bet their personal solvency to keep their company alive. 3️⃣ Series A+: Funds write small checks, take months to decide, and still underwrite like it's private equity. Momentum dies. Founders raise the same amount in the U.S. in half the time and 2x the valuation. And for the rare few we 𝘥𝘰 back through pre-seed and Series A—when the risk is highest—we let them go south for Series B, when the risk is largely gone and growth is near certain. Canada takes the early risk and exports the late-stage upside. We talk about unicorns, but act like we’re allergic to scale. To win big, Canada needs to reward audacity, not caution. --- *To the few true pre-seed/seed investors I’ve met—thank you for carrying the Canadian innovation ecosystem on your shoulders. PS. If this post looks like something you've read before, it's not by accident; it was heavily inspired by Dallas' original write-up: https://lnkd.in/p/g8AQPZD4. He's a terrific leader in the North American startup ecosystem. Shoot him a follow + note — he might write you your next cheque 😉 👉 I share my thoughts 2-3 times/week on VC, startups, and what I’m personally investing in (public + private). Follow along :)

There are too few investors and not enough capital allocated to the Agrifood space in Canada and anyone in the sector knows it. As a VC focused on earlier stage food and beverage, health and wellness companies, we see the growth capital gap every day. If you’re asking yourself why supporting agrifood matters heres a couple things to ponder. First, food security isn’t a talking point. It’s the basis of sovereignty. Our ability to feed ourselves is the first line of defence for any country that wants real independence. We all need to eat every day. Second, this is our largest manufacturing sector. Jobs, livelihoods and innovation in good food happen here. Our food quality is some of the best in the world. When we eat healthier food we are a healthier, stronger nation. I also want to recognize the critical role FCC / FAC play in supporting and investing in Canadian agriculture and Agrifood. Justine Hendricks and her team have been tireless advocates for the sector and for the entrepreneurs trying to build within it. Anyone who has worked in Agrifood knows how complex it is. Success depends on farmers, ingredient suppliers, processors, brokers, distributors, regulators, retailers and consumer acceptance all working together. It’s not simple and it’s not for the faint of heart. At District Ventures Capital we see these interdependencies up close. We see the grit and the risk these entrepreneurs take. We value the support that comes from every crown corporation helping these entrepreneurs grow. The sector needs significantly more investment and more champions. That’s just a fact. So please keep buying Canadian food. Invest in Canadian agrifood entrepreneurs if you can. Recognize the people and institutions that are helping build these businesses. We are so quick to complain in this country and not quick enough to acknowledge when real progress is being made. ❤️🇨🇦

If you’ve ever shipped liquid beverages across state or provincial lines… you already know. Consumers think shipping should be free. Reality? It might be $40 or $50. The disconnect between what shipping actually costs and what customers think it costs has never been greater. What customers see: A box A label A truck “Free shipping” as the default expectation What producers see: Heavy packages (liquid = weight) Protective inserts Temperature control (think goldilocks) Adult signature requirements (on alc) Carrier surcharges Insurance Breakage risk Returns Volatile and rising fuel and labor costs And in many cases, brands are subsidizing a meaningful portion of the true cost just to keep the customer experience competitive. This isn’t just a beverage issue. It’s a CPG issue. It’s a margin issue. It’s a transparency issue. When I was personally delivering early cases of Partake out of my Toyota Matrix in Toronto, shipping was sweat equity. Today, with containers moving daily across North America, logistics is one of the most strategic (and volatile) lines on the P&L. Here’s the leadership takeaway: If your category involves heavy, fragile, regulated, or temperature-sensitive products, shipping is not a line item. It’s a strategy. You have three choices as I see it: Hide it and compress margin Overcharge and create friction Educate your customer and build trust Because “free shipping” isn’t free. It’s paid for somewhere. Founders/operators how are you handling it right now? Baking it into price? Higher AOV thresholds? Membership or subscription models? Radical transparency? Let’s compare notes. #cpg #founder #operations #ecommerce

OPEN UP THE DOORS to more Canadian-made brands🇨🇦🚪 As we prepare to show up, walk and meat up at CHFA Canadian Health Food Association we’re reflecting on what it truly takes for an emerging food brand to earn its place on the shelf. At The Meat Bar, we have been pounding the pavement for just 18 months now! We don’t simply deliver our products and walk away. We actively support our retail partners through: 🥩 In-store demos and sampling 🥩 Bold, high-impact merchandising 🥩 Store visits and shelf check-ins 🥩 Community partnerships and sponsorships 🥩 Trade shows, festivals, markets and live activations 🥩 Consistent storytelling that builds brand recognition and consumer demand We bring the product, the energy, the origin story and the people behind the brand. We show up because being listed is only the beginning—our goal is to help move product off the shelf and into customers’ hands. But there is also a bigger industry conversation we need to keep having. If Canadian retailers and distributors want to champion local innovation, we need partnerships that allow emerging brands to grow sustainably. Listing fees, lengthy payment terms, production fees, high distributor margins and ongoing deductions can leave small and medium-sized makers with very little room to reinvest, innovate or scale. There has to be a better way to work together. This isn’t about asking for a handout. It’s about recognizing the value Canadian founders bring and building partnerships that are sustainable for everyone—from suppliers and makers to distributors and retailers. Consumers are asking for Canadian-made products. They connect with the founders, follow the brand journey and become loyal because of the story—but ultimately, the product in their hands is the real proof. If it delivers, they come back. The Meat Bar is ready to grow. We’re ready to expand across Canada, support our retail partners and keep building momentum with supercharged, meat-based protein bars made with real ingredients and functional benefits, the only meat protein bar out there with supercharged extra beneficial supplements!! To the grocery buyers, brokers and distributors attending CHFA: let’s MEAT, collaborate and find a way to open more doors for Canadian innovation. From our cart to your stores. From your shelves to consumers’ hands. Let’s raise the bar together 💪🇨🇦🥩 #CHFA #CanadianMade #FoodInnovation #RetailBuyers #GroceryIndustry #EmergingBrands #CPG #SupportCanadianBusiness #TheMeatBar #RaiseTheBar #BarWithBenefits

A food compliance company reached out to us about a year ago through a LinkedIn DM. They wanted to simplify ingredient tracking for one of their clients. We turned an internal operations request into an external marketing opportunity, and earned two, hearty “wow”-statements in quick succession. The initial conversations moved slowly as we worked through their specific needs and how our platform could fit into their compliance workflow. They needed a way to track raw materials across different systems, and we earned our first “wow” after solving that cleanly for them. The second "wow" came when they realized that the same traceability data could be surfaced to their end customers. They could tell their audience about ingredient purity and supply chain transparency, turning what was purely an operational tool into a brand story in just one click. Not a lot changed on our end, but we were able to deliver two outcomes with one system because the foundation was built right. The unexpected upside came from solving one problem well enough that it revealed an entirely different opportunity they didn't know about. The distance between internal operations and external marketing is shorter than most companies realize. When traceability is clean enough for compliance, it's usually clean enough to become a customer promise. You can surface a lot of what you're already doing internally and turn it into a feature customers care about.

Village Farms Introduces Industry-First, One-Way Aroma Valve in Cannabis Packaging Pure Sunfarms brand becomes the first licensed producer in Canada to let consumers see and smell flower before purchase DELTA, British Columbia, Oct. 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Village Farms International, Inc. (Nasdaq: VFF) today announced another Canadian first innovation from its Pure Sunfarms brand: the launch of a one-way aroma valve built directly into its dried flower packaging. The one-way aroma valve is pressure-activated and designed to release the flower’s scent only when gently squeezed, while preventing air, moisture, and contaminants from entering the bag. The innovation allows consumers to experience the natural aroma of the flower, without opening the package or compromising product integrity. Adapted from proven technology long used in premium coffee packaging, it represents the next evolution in cannabis packaging, bringing a sensory dimension never before available in the legal market. “Smell is powerful—it connects us instantly to how we feel, shaping our choices in ways we don’t even think about,” said Orville Bovenschen, President, Village Farms Canadian Cannabis. “First, we gave people a window so they could see the flower. Now, we’ve added a valve so they can smell it. It might seem like a small thing, but in cannabis, it’s huge. Because it’s more than just aroma: it’s increased accessibility, as well as memory, emotion, and experience all at once. These details matter because they bring everyone back to that first time we smelled and smoked great flower; that moment that stays with you. With this innovation, we’re proud to do that for all consumers.”
