Renaming Brussels place names

[edit]

Hi,

Why are you renaming the Thurn and Taxis page to the French name? As far as I know Thurn and Taxis a neutral English name that doesn't favor French over Dutch or vice versa. Could you revert these changes? JhowieNitnek (talk) 10:59, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jhowie,
Please refer back to WP's Brussels naming conventions, where it is clearly stated that a) if an English name exists, to use it 2) if it does not, to use the most frequent equivalent in English. The name 'Tour & Taxis' is officially used in English by the Tour et Taxis/Thurn en Taxis site (https://tour-taxis.com/), visit.brussels, etc. 'Thurn and Taxis' on the other hand is not a neutral English name in this case, but the (less common) Dutch name. I hope this helps! Jason Lagos (talk) 11:09, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
On a different note, you may have seen that the 'St V' article on WP has been renamed following your suggestion. Thanks again for that. ;-) Jason Lagos (talk) 11:16, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Avenue Docteur Zamenhof

[edit]

Hi,

Just wondering why have you removed the disambiguator "Anderlecht" when there are several other streets with similar names in France? WikiEditor50 (talk) 13:51, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi WikiEditor50 and thanks for your message. No other avenue uses the category name 'Avenue Docteur Zamenhof/Dokter Zamenhoflaan' (with the FR/NL combination, consistent with the Brussels naming conventions) anywhere in Belgium or beyond. Therefore, adding 'Anderlecht' as a disambiguator here is unnecessary, as it is unlikely to cause any confusion with French streets, which would likely only use a French name. Jason Lagos (talk) 14:07, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wouldn't a disambiguator be helpful for those who may take a picture of one of the streets in France who may miscategorize their picture by assuming that the Dutch name is a Commons translation? I don't think Commons disallows disambiguators when there is potential for confusion. WikiEditor50 (talk) 14:16, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I understand your point, but I don't think we should base category names on hypothetical mistakes made by editors when the potential for confusion is extremely low. Many other place names in Brussels share their toponyms with places in other parts of Belgium, France, or the Netherlands (e.g. Category:Place Royale/Koningsplein, Category:Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat, Category:La Bourse/De Beurs etc.), yet disambiguators are not used either due to the FR/NL sequence. Brussel Midi

[edit]

I started a discussion https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Moving_from_Category:Brussels_Midi_station_to_Category:Brussels-South_railway_station. There are also many Midi station subcategories. Could you wait until there is a agreement? Smiley.toerist (talk) 13:12, 17 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Smiley.toerist,
Thank you for your message. I have replied to you over there. Jason Lagos (talk) 14:12, 17 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Brussels Cat

[edit]

Can you please respect the standard way of working? If a category has wrong name, please clean up. I hope everybody can read this remark. Thank you. Carolus (talk) 20:15, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sure - I will bear this in mind in the future. Jason Lagos (talk) 20:40, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also appreciate the more constructive tone here; this is the right way to discuss a topic with another editor. Jason Lagos (talk) 20:40, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
