School-based Programs A+ Schools A+ Schools of North Carolina is transforming education with the philosophy that the arts are fundamental to teaching and learning. National History Day® in North Carolina This project-based program is designed to inspire historical inquiry in middle and high school students. It has an optional competition component allowing students to showcase their work at the regional, state, and national levels. The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans This one-man performance elevates the stories of Black freedom fighters and veterans with North Carolina connections who have engaged in over 400 years of a struggle for freedom, liberty, and equality. Poetry Out Loud Access free resources and inspire students to master public speaking, connect with literature, and compete statewide and nationally. School of Rockfish Through this project, teachers and students embark on an adventure in conservation science! Participating classrooms construct a tank, monitor water quality and raise and release tiny fry (juvenile fish) in partnership with real fisheries biologists. Student Writing Contest Each fall, find lesson plans, activities, and prompts inspired by Thomas Wolfe and then encourage your students to enter their own short stories in an annual contest. Tar Heel Junior Historian Association This free program from the NC Museum of History empowers 4th-12th grade students to discover local and state history—in an active, hands-on way!
