Using Greek in the lead and infobox

[edit]

Is there precedent on the site for prominently featuring historical languages of a city in the lead and infobox, despite their lack of official status in its modern incarnation? I find no similar cases in cities of comparable historical status, such as Kaliningrad, Mexico City, Istanbul or even London. This seems more appropriately placed in an etymology section, as Greek has no status in Egypt today. Given that the removal of this language has been consistently contested, it would be useful to review Wikipedia guidelines on the proper presentation of such names. Agreed. This should be left for the relevant section below. In fact, the relevant guideline in the style manual (MOS:FOREIGNEQUIV) states that the lead should limit itself to one relevant non-English name in parenthesis. Since Coptic is no longer in use except as a liturgical language, it too should be moved to the "Name" section instead. R Prazeres (talk) 16:34, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a link to brazilwood in the Islamic Era section. It makes it seem like it comes from either Arabia, India, or Southeast Asia, yet Brazilwood is from South America. I suspect it is wrong, or more context is needed. It is especially suspicious since it is talking about the midieval period when Brazil was still unknown. 104.254.203.226 (talk) 19:20, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
