In my view we need improved phrasing when referring to soccer in the opening paragraph. The current phrasing, "... soccer (known in many other countries as "soccer" or just "football")", seems clumsy and awkward and also not entirely accurate. I'm not sure that there are actually "many" other countries where the code is known by this name. How about some simpler and more straightforward phrasing such as "... soccer (as the code has been most commonly known in Australia and some other countries)" or just "... (as the code has been most commonly known in Australia")? Or"is known" rather than "has been known". This kind of phrasing may help avoid some of the arguments about the name which we can all live with. Thoughts? Afterwriting (talk) 01:40, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I am fairly certain that almost all English speakers know what soccer is. Stop trying to tell the world it's called football at all. HiLo48 (talk) 03:13, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
FYI : 1. My civil comments suggesting some different - and simplified - phrasing on this matter are both reasonable and acceptable. 2. Your snarky and sarcastic comments are not. Afterwriting (talk) 04:21, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No snark or sarcasm was intended. (Perhaps a hint of frustration snuck through in my comment.) Please take my comments at face value. Soccer is Wikipedia's name for the game in Australia. That name is understood throughout the world. There is no need to try to use the word football in describing it at all. HiLo48 (talk) 07:26, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
