Application development of a new oil

NoPalm Ingredients approached me to ask if I could take over responsibilities from one of their employees who’d be going on maternity leave soon (within a couple of weeks). Within a few weeks we hashed out our collaboration and the employee and I started the hand over quickly. Not long after I was up and running and fully part of the team. Nothing more fun than onboarding on a new team and project and learning a ton in those first few days to quicky get up to speed.

NoPalm Ingredients produces sustainable oil from food waste streams. I’m part of their ‘application’ team, spearheading the development of applications of the oil. But I also keep an eye out for oil quality, specifications, the effect processing has on our oil, and more. As a scaling start up, there’s a lot of different fascinating areas that need attention. Flexibility is key.

Upskilling workers through interactive trainings

Fresh Quality Support has been growing steadily over the past years, helping more and more food business improve their quality management and food safety culture practices. They started to need extra help, especially when it came to developing and giving trainings to the employees of their customers.

While working together very closely, I help the team develop (and give) trainings for their customers. Some examples are an internal audit training for internal auditors, a training on helping employees implement continuous improvement in their workplaces (through PDCA), an in-depth food safety training, and more.

Key here is that we don’t produce generic, ‘copy-paste’ trainings. All trainings are customized to the customer, and, most importantly, are not ‘boring’ powerpoint slide trainings. Yes, we use a presentation, but, the employees are actively involved and have to do little exercises all throughout the training. That way, we ensure they can actually practice and ‘do’ what they’re learning.

Helping (small) companies move forward

Over the years I’ve done 1:1 consulting with a variety of (smaller) food companies. In some cases we had a few 1:1 online calls to specificly discuss their chalelnges. In other cases, we’ve worked together for a couple of months to help them improve their systems.

For instance, I’ve helped a small start up making plant based snacks troubleshoot their production processes. They ran into some technical challenges when scaling up, and in a call we discussed what might be happening and how they could solve them.

Also, I’ve worked with a small bakery who didn’t have a good recipe management system. Recipes were written on pieces of paper, spread around and it made it hard to onboard new employees. We worked on digitizing all recipes, so scaling would no longer be as cumbersome (just say how many cookies/cakes you need and the recipe calculates the quantities for you) and to make it easier to share and communicate them.
