Pop-Tarts in the air fryer take about 3 minutes at 300°F (150°C) in a preheated appliance. That was the timing in my latest test: I checked them at 2½ minutes and took them out at about 3 minutes. Start checking early, because your air fryer and the pastry you choose can change the result.
This method is for regular store-bought Pop-Tarts. I used frosted strawberry for this test, and they were delicious. They got a light toasting without turning too dark, and the texture was fantastic.
For me, this felt quicker and more straightforward than using the toaster, but maybe that's just because I love using my air fryer. I especially liked being able to check on the Pop-Tarts and see how they were coming along.
How long do Pop-Tarts take in the air fryer?
For the preheated method tested here, use 300°F (150°C), check at 2½ minutes, and expect about 3 minutes of heating. Preheating time is separate. If the pastries need a little more warmth or crisping, continue in 30-second increments rather than adding several minutes at once.
If your air fryer does not require preheating, start at 300°F and check at about 3 minutes. Add time in 30-second increments if needed; the full directions are below.
What you need
- Regular store-bought Pop-Tarts: I used frosted strawberry. Use only as many as fit flat in one layer, with a little space between them.
- An air fryer with a clean basket or rack.
- A heat-safe silicone spatula and a plate: Have them ready before the pastries finish heating.
- Butter, optional: A small amount if you like butter on your Pop-Tarts.

If your air fryer requires preheating
- Preheat to 300°F (150°C). Follow your appliance's preheating instructions.
- Remove the foil pouch. Place the unwrapped pastries flat in the basket or on the rack. If they are frosted, keep the frosting facing up. Do not stack or overlap them.
- Check at 2½ minutes. Look for the warmth and crispness you want. My test finished at about 3 minutes.
- Add time only if needed. Continue in 30-second increments, checking each time.
- Carefully remove and let cool. Support each pastry with a heat-safe silicone spatula and transfer it to a plate. Allow the frosting and filling to cool before eating.
If your air fryer does not require preheating
- Start with a cool appliance. Follow the manual's instructions for loading and starting your model.
- Unwrap and arrange the pastries. Remove the foil pouch and place the Pop-Tarts flat in one layer, without stacking or overlapping. Keep any frosting facing up.
- Set the air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Begin heating and make your first check at about 3 minutes.
- Finish by checking, not by assuming a fixed time. A cold start may need longer than the preheated method. Add 30 seconds at a time until the pastries are warmed to your liking.
- Carefully transfer to a plate and let cool. Use a heat-safe silicone spatula, and give the filling and frosting time to cool before taking a bite.
Making another batch? Your air fryer will already be warm, so check the next batch earlier.
A little butter is optional
Butter on a Pop-Tart is really good. If you want to add some, rub a small amount onto the unfrosted side before heating. You can also spread it on after the pastry comes out. Keep it to a thin layer and use the same early checks rather than assuming the timing cannot change.
A few tips before the first bite
- Keep a single layer. If your basket is small, heat another batch instead of stacking the pastries.
- Stay nearby. This is a short heating time, and the frosting can overheat. Do not leave the appliance unattended.
- Use a silicone spatula for removal. I used a silicone spatula to lift mine out because I'm not trying to burn my hand before work. The basket, pastries, filling, and frosting can all be hot. Keep your fingers away from hot surfaces.
- Let them cool on the plate. A pastry that feels manageable on the outside can still have very hot filling. Do not bite into it straight from the basket.

Do you need to flip Pop-Tarts?
The manufacturer's air-fryer directions do not call for flipping. Keep frosted pastries frosting-side up and check the underside when you remove them. Avoid handling or turning them unnecessarily while the frosting is hot.
Does this timing work for every variety?
Do not assume the same timing works for larger, extra-stuffed, protein, bite-size, or homemade pastries. Check the directions for the product you have. This post covers regular packaged toaster pastries, and the amount of browning you prefer can also change the finishing time.

Pop-Tarts in the Air Fryer
In my preheated air fryer, frosted strawberry Pop-Tarts came out lightly toasted without getting too dark after about 3 minutes at 300°F. The texture was fantastic. Check at 2½ minutes and add time only if needed.
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 300°F (150°C), following your appliance's instructions.
- Remove the foil pouch. Arrange 2 regular Pop-Tarts flat in a single layer, leaving space between them. Keep any frosting facing up; do not stack or overlap.
- Check at 2½ minutes. My preheated test finished at about 3 minutes. If needed, add 30 seconds at a time, checking each time.
- Carefully lift each pastry onto a plate with a heat-safe silicone spatula. Let the frosting and filling cool before eating.
Notes
Timing: The 3-minute cook time reflects my preheated 300°F test and excludes preheating and cooling. Appliances and varieties vary.
Without preheating: For models that do not require preheating, follow the manual, start at 300°F, make the first check at about 3 minutes, and continue in 30-second increments as needed.
Optional butter: Rub a thin layer onto the unfrosted side before heating, or spread some on afterward. Check early.
The basket, filling, and frosting can be very hot. Use a silicone spatula, let the pastries cool, and stay nearby while heating.
