datasets >=18.0.5 hangs on macOS arm64 #490

Description

Before opening an issue, please:

  • Make sure you are using the latest version using datasets --version
  • Review our documentation

Describe the bug
I recently upgraded a Conda environment with ncbi-datasets-cli installed to arm64 (from x86_64). After this upgrade, any invocation of datasets — including datasets --version — hangs and does not exit. The command continues to use CPU at a low level.

I have investigated previous versions, and the most recent version that I can get to work — i.e., to exit properly after completing work — is 18.0.2. Everything more recent that that hangs, on any invocation (datasets --version, datasets --help, or actually trying to download something).

I'm not sure what version I was running prior to the upgrade to running as arm64 binaries.

I am running macOS 15.5, but a coworker has reproduced the issue on macOS 14.3.1 (again, arm64), so I do not think this is an OS-level issue.

To Reproduce

  1. Run any datasets invocation, including datasets --help or datasets --version
  2. See that the command executes, prints the expected output, but does not exit:
> datasets --version
datasets version: 18.2.0

Expected behavior
datasets should exit when it is done working.
