I've reached a point where I can no longer use VS Code on my work laptop in its current state. As a workaround, I’ve had to set up a virtual Windows 11 machine using VMware Workstation Pro—which, fortunately, is now free. Hopefully, someone will be able to identify the root cause or at least suggest a viable workaround soon. |

Subject: URGENT: Copilot's Latest Update is Crippling VS Code – Immediate Fix Required To the Copilot Team, Let's be unequivocally clear: the latest version of GitHub Copilot is causing widespread, critical system freezes in VS Code. This is not an isolated incident; it's a fundamental flaw that is actively disrupting the workflow of thousands of users globally. My personal experience, which mirrors countless others, involves VS Code freezing every few minutes—sometimes as frequently as every three minutes. This renders your product, which should be an indispensable tool, utterly unusable. We appreciate the communication, but frankly, statements that sound like "responding to your request" feel like public relations rhetoric when the core functionality of a widely adopted tool has collapsed. This is not about political discourse; it's about a product failing catastrophically for its user base. My professional output as a seasoned coder building maintainable systems is being severely hampered. While my natural ability to spot system flaws and code inefficiencies usually gives me an edge, I simply cannot manually type code at the speed Copilot offered when it was functional. The significant productivity gap between my manual output and Copilot's potential is precisely why I, and others, invested in this tool. This issue isn't about system specifications; my AMD Ryzen 9 and 32GB RAM are more than capable, as evidenced by VS Code running flawlessly when Copilot is disabled. The culprit is demonstrably Copilot itself. The suggestion for users to "upgrade" to a version that is actively breaking their development environment is unacceptable. For many, including myself, downgrading to a previously stable version is not just a preference, but a critical necessity to regain basic functionality. We need clear, immediate guidance on how to revert to a working version, as a matter of priority for our ongoing work. This is a critical bug impacting daily operations for a massive user base. It requires immediate, focused attention and a swift resolution, not a public relations exercise. Address this performance regression as the absolute top priority it is for the integrity of your product and the productivity of your users. Sincerely, Shaun Palmer |

Experiencing the exact same thing. VSCode crashes every other 5 minutes, when using Copilot. Needs attention. |

I, too, have the same problem on Ubuntu 24.04 desktop with 16Gb RAM which seemed to begin as soon as i paid for a Pro subscription. In addition to everything in VSCode Github Copilot freezing for several seconds on a consistent basis, the Explorer has to reconnect constantly which also causes lengthy delays in my work. I spend at least 50% of my time waiting for a response from VSCode so I can continue. I feel like I've been 'baited' to pay a subscription that is almost worthless because of all of my wasted time |

The past month has been horrible using copilot but these last few days its become almost unusable (regardless of the model selected). I have had to disable it if I want to actually code and when I do enable it, the freezing is every 30 seconds sometimes lasting 10 seconds but can last up to 1 minute. As previous posters have stated, this tool is invaluable in that it can code faster than i ever could. But with this freezing, its beyond frustrating. Not to mention the amount of wasted premium credits on requests that continuously fail with "retry" and/or when I have to kill it because its stuck in "working" for over 10 minutes. In the last few days it's also been "summarizing conversation" every other action and each summary im assuming is racking up the credits not to mention taking up significant time. Is there a way to revert back to whatever build was stable a month ago? |

if the problem persists you can switch to other code helping tools like codium it's loved by the community even senior devs use it daily. As for the copilot problem you should use a previous version which is stable and does not causes freezing or lags. |

The only workaround that fixed this for me was to open a new copilot chat. works smoothly now. |

I would highly recommend using Claude Code plugin instead. I doesn't freeze and automatically summarizes and starts a chat when it reaches the limit. I used to use Copilot experiencing the same issues as people here and switched to Claude Code. With no changes to my setup I haven't experienced any issues with Claude Code. |

I am having some of the worst performance I have ever experienced with VS Code Insiders while using GitHub Copilot. Responses take several seconds, clicking buttons has a five second delay, scrolling is sluggish, and I keep getting window freezes that force me to reload the editor. This is crazy. The performance never used to be this bad. |

I have had this issue frequently over the past few months. Copilot is completely unusable in this state. |

I, too, started experiencing regular freezes of VS Code when using the GitHub Copilot extension. The current state of Copilot is next to unusable as the freezes occur almost on every prompt and the only way to get forward looks to be to kill the entire VS Code process. It does not look to be related to VS Code version. I never had the issue with I've been a happy user of GitHub Copilot for about two years but the current situation is not tolerable. If it is not resolved soon, I'm forced to look for options. |

if anyone still have this issue the solution is: kill all zombie node process and increase the watchers to maximum |

I think we have a couple different issues.. some have issues with the long context/slow + lagging vscode and some have the "I need to constantly kill the process so it works or restart the machine" (see https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/159701#discussioncomment-15126081) This morning I was having non-stop freezing issues + always killing the process.. it was just Edge + VSCode, side-by-side.. stepping out of the AI chat and inspecting things on Edge would make VSCode go unresponsive mode and force me to restart it every single time (was in a call, so couldn't restart the machine). so, just out of curiosity.. can any of you confirm/disable "Game Mode" and report back? Did that and it's working fine now.. without a restart. At this point it might be just a coincidence.. |

I have the same issue. I noticed it's happening while I'm using Gemini 3 Pro with an api key (Which has 1M context window). I don't know if it's relevant but I also have Github Copilot Pro. If the chat in Copilot gets very long, or perhaps Copilot does a lot of changes, the window keeps freezing. If I somehow managed to exit that chat after restarting and then try again to open the chat that caused the freezes then the window starts freezing again, so I can't even check my prompts to try again. It's very annoying. I also have a powerful computer, so it's definitely a problem with Copilot in VSCode. Version: 1.108.2 (user setup) |

Hey, I had the same issue when switching focus from VS code to another app while the copilot chat was doing some work. If the chat window finished rendering and the VS code was not in focus then whole VS code became frozen after that What seem to help me solve this problem was adding registry setting here is more detailed explenation for this issue: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/434299271 Hope this helps |

Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with Visual Studio Code on my work laptop and would really appreciate any help or suggestions.
Overview:
I have VS Code installed on both my home desktop and work laptop, and I'm logged into both using the same credentials. While everything works smoothly on my home desktop, I'm encountering a persistent problem on my work laptop.
The Issue:
Every ~30 seconds, VS Code freezes for about 10 seconds, then resumes as if nothing happened. This cycle repeats continuously, making it very difficult to work.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
I disabled all extensions, including GitHub Copilot — this resolved the issue.
I then enabled only GitHub Copilot, and the freezing returned immediately.
This strongly suggests that Copilot is the cause of the problem on this machine.
I also disabled Sophos antivirus temporarily to rule it out, but it made no difference.
System Details:
Laptop Model: HP 250 G8
Processor: Intel Core i7
Memory: 32 GB RAM
Antivirus: Sophos Endpoint Protection (temporarily disabled for testing)
Copilot Plan: Copilot Pro
Extensions: Only Copilot enabled during testing
Request:
Has anyone else experienced this kind of freezing behaviour with Copilot? Are there any known compatibility issues or settings I should check? I’m at my wits’ end trying to resolve this and would be grateful for any advice or potential fixes.
Thanks in advance!
