How do I disable “Summarized conversation history” in Copilot Agent?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using GitHub Copilot Agent in VS Code extensively this past week. Until recently, the experience was smooth and fast — but now, the agent keeps inserting “✅ Summarized conversation history” after almost every single action.

Here’s an example of what it looks like:

🔍 This behavior:

Just started recently — likely due to a backend update or A/B feature rollout.

Slows down the workflow significantly, especially when debugging or reviewing tests.

Cannot be disabled via prompt (e.g. “don’t summarize”) or via settings.json.

❓My questions:
Is there any way to turn this off?

Is there a setting (hidden or planned) like "copilot.agent.summarize": false?

Can we provide feedback to disable this for power users who prefer concise output?

This verbosity is frustrating for developers who want the agent to just do what’s asked — without echoing or summarizing every micro-step. I’d really appreciate advice from GitHub team members or anyone else who has managed to work around this.

There was someone who raised this in Conversation history summarization makes everything worse, and that led to an option to turn off the feature itself.

If you’re okay with disabling the whole summarization thing, you can use the setting github.copilot.chat.summarizeAgentConversationHistory.enabled. Try setting it to false and see if that does the trick!

SINCE NO ONE ACTUALLY SHOWED WHERE TO FIND THE SETTING and ONLY TALKED ABOUT IT.

HERE YA GO:

1. INSIDE IDE (for me it's VSCODE) -> Click on the left bottom profile icon -> Click Settings -> Top bar says Search Settings -> Type "Summarize" -> First option on the top "GitHub › Copilot › Chat › Summarize Agent Conversation History: Enabled"
